System Hard Drive 77% fragmented and will not optimize? Help please.

    Hi
HP Laptop 240 2000ca, win 10 update from win 7. The system hard drive stays at 77% fragmented and when analyzed it moves to 100%, then when I optimize it runs a very few seconds and stays at 77% fragmented and says it needs optimization. Photo attached I hope. Computer seems to be slow and freezing.

What is wrong with this thing?
    Thanks ron3033

    UPDATE:
All of a sudden the system hard drive was 0% fragmented (Dec. 28, 2016). Don't know why it fixed itself, unless updates that happen did this? Computer does not work any better, often I can out type it as whole words sometimes lag?

First think I would be doing is back up your data.
Have a look at Event Viewer for any disk related warnings or errors, could be your drive is on the way out. I had all sorts of warnings and errors relating to a drive that appeared to be running slow and locking up on defrag, even though chkdsk said it was fine, obviously it wasn't as it took 4 hours to complete. When I benchmarked it, the transfer rate was maximum of 8MB / Sec, should have been around 60, so I replaced the drive, not a problem as I backup everything.

Hi, #2 quite reasonably says you should ignore defragmentation as regards the System Reserved partition.

Defragmentation is not what is you should be concerned about here. Freezing is another matter.

To determine the state of your drive, try running Crystal Diskinfo (free) which will give you a quick green/orange/red indication based on SMART params.

As to it being slow and freezing, there are plenty of threads on this topic. Freezing could be due to a multitude of causes, from RAM problems and compatibility to some other hardware problem, to disk corruption. There will most probably not be anything in your event log related to freezes.

Speed: please start by posting a screenshot of your task manager when the PC is nominally idle.

Assuming CPU and disk usage is ok, post a screenshot of
    Crystal Diskmark
which will give figures for disk data transfer rates.
