    Slow!

I have a new Dell laptop with Windows 10. It runs so slowly - worse than my desktop I just replaced. What am i doing incorrectly? I am technically challenged!

Hi Memom. Welcome to the TenForums @Memom

Could be your machine, new machines sometimes come broken. Lets assume it is software.

Could you be more specific, is it the boot, opening programs, using internet, what is slow?

How long have you had it turned on and connected to the Internet, roughly?

Another member had a new Dell and said it came with several AV packages. I would recommend only running one. Windows Defender is a fine product but if you want to demo one of the prepackaged ones that is also okay.

What AV's are installed and running. (Look in your notification area and identify each icon. Some icons are hidden.)

What version and build of Windows 10 are you using.

Windows Key + R, type winver, enter. Post results.

If you open Task manager and click "more details" do any of the headings show excessive usage, usage over 70%. You can sort column by clicking word under percentage. It will sort low to high or high to low with each click.

What is process or app is driving the high usage for a category?

What power plan are you using, some devices throttle back on battery to preserve the battery. Does it run faster plugged in?

I appreciate how quickly you answered. I have worked completely with the computer plugged in because of the amount of usage I knew I would be using. I have unplugged it and it is now super fast just using the battery. I have version 1709 - OS Build 16299.492. i have used it as long as 8 hours during the day for the past three or four days - downloading thousands of embroidering designs. I felt I should do that because of the battery usage. With it unplugged, it is super fast - a fact I just determined as I have not used it at all without being plugged in. The computer came with McAfee which I have used before and am satisfied with it for now. I have it for a year and will then determine if I prefer another software AV. As directed by you to go to Task Manager, I only had one section that shows 73% and that is memory. In that column, it shows Windows Explorer at 237.6MB. This is all Greek to me. Hope it makes sense to you Thanks again for helping me.

" I have unplugged it and it is now super fast just using the battery" suggests to me that something is wrong with power saving plan as it should be totally opposite !!
    Type CONTROL in RUN.
    View: Large icons.
    Go to POWER OPTIONS
    Choose HIGH PERFORMANCE.
    See what happens.

Agree, sounds backwards in terms of performance when plugged in.

How much memory is loaded on machine?

What was else was happening on your machine when you saw memory over 70%

Long shot but I wonder if your machine is busy preparing for V1803, although it should do that plugged in or not.

You said this is a new machine so I would assume very quickly MS would target for upgrade.

    Could you follow this path

Start > Settings > Update & Security > Check for updates (Click on Check for Updates)

You might find your machine is processing updates. Do you see one with the words to the effect Feature Update V1803.

This is a large update, I assume you have good speed on Internet and a reasonable data cap.
