Windows Settings does not clean Temp Files

In the year since Win 10 came out I have tried probably 30 times on about 5 different computers to use Settings to clean Temp files, and have left it for hours, and it has never removed a Megabyte. (Settings/System/Storage/This PC/Temporary files) It says I have 1.36 GB of Temp Files but I don't know where they are; I have used Disk Cleanup and removed all it could find. When I use the Settings Temp Cleanup it says "We are cleaning temp files, come back in a while to check the results", then I leave it for hours or overnight and there is no change. Do I have to leave it for a week to clean Temp files? I would think that overnight should be enough time but I have done it overnight several times and left it for hours dozens of times and I'm pretty sure it has never removed a byte. Why is it even there if it doesn't do anything. I don't like waiting for hours for the computer to do something, only to find that it has done nothing but waste my time.

    Hello,

When I use Disk Cleanup I place check marks in all the boxes I want to clean, sometimes all of them. Click OK, click delete files. After it closes I reopen it. Next, I click on Clean Up System Files. Again, I place check marks in all the boxes I want to clean, sometimes all of them. Click OK, click delete files. After it closes I reopen it once more to check what was not removed. If there are a lot of files remaining, I repeat the entire procedure until it will not remove anymore. What is usually left are a few MB's of Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files, I usually just leave those. Those are usually files or favorites you saved.

Next, I run CCleaner to clean temp files, I repeat running the cleaner until there is nothing more to remove. I usually run the registry the same way, but do not recommend you use this function unless you know what to leave or remove.

Just use the free version of CCleaner, works fine.

    Hope this helps,

If you are using disk cleanup from command prompt or Run make sure you start it as administrator.

    Windows will not clean:

    1. files, which are running
    2. files, which are protected

Like AMD drivers, they create tmp files in Windows folder, they can be removed only manually by taking ownership.

If you really want to delete them, use some cleaning software like CCleaner to find out, which files can not be removed.

I use Disk Cleaner to clean the things that it will remove as described above. But the new Windows 10 Settings App still says there are 1.36 GB of Temp files that can be removed and tells me to come back in a "bit' to check out the results. That's my beef. I have waited a "bit" for hours and even overnight dozens of times and it has never removed a single bit! If Microsoft is incapable of making it work to remove any temp files then why don't they remove it so people don't waste a "bit" of time for hours. I wonder how many millions of hours Windows 10 users have collectively waited on this App that doesn't do anything. If the 1.36 GB of temp files that it keeps tempting me into trying to remove cannot be removed then the App shouldn't waste my time by telling me that it can remove it.
