System and Compressed Memory (High memory usage)

    Hello there,
I am here today as I have had a problem with System and Compressed Memory since I installed Windows 10 back in December of 2015.
Now keep in mind, this isn't a normal issue, as I have yet to actually find anything in regards to what to do to fix this.
(I have also posted on Microsoft's official forum, and had zero luck, due to the fact that everyone who started posting had a different issue/misunderstood what my issue was, and distracted the attention from the opening post.)
When downloading anything at all, be it games, music, videos, etc, System and Compressed Memory starts to use up more and more memory, which obviously sounds normal, and might seem fine.
However, if I have not restarted my computer at all, around the 10gb download mark, my computer starts running extremely slow, while System and Compressed Memory starts maxing out Memory usage on Task Manager.
Any help is appreciated, as I obviously have not found anything in regards to this myself. It is possible I just haven't looked hard enough, but regardless!
If there is any information you'd like to ask of me, I'll do my best to check this post as often as possible. Thanks!

    PC Specs :
    Intel i7 6700k
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970
    Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 3
    8 GB (Two 4 GB Modules) of DDR4 G Skill 2800Mhz

(If there is anything I need to post that I missed, such as a system analysis, please let me know. Thanks!)

Make sure your Intel drivers are up to date. Also, try disabling Fast Startup to see if this makes a difference.

Low Memory Notification on machine thaT NEVER HAD ONE PREVIOUSLY

I came to the forums to ask more or less the same question. I apologize if it's going to look like I am hijacking this thread, but I think my case illustrate better than any other similar case I have seen that there is something wrong with the way Windows 10 handles memory under certain conditions. The fact that I run Win 10 on exactly the same hardware with drastically different outcomes I think illustrated the problem, whatever it is, very well and makes it more defined than someone seeing this low memory warning on a new machine or a new install of win 10.

Aside from minor mods like a new graphic card and an SSD (all installed while I was still running Windows 7 Pro), I have changed practically nothing on my machine in terms of hardware or software for the last two years or so.
As my system specs show, I have 12GB of RAM and that was sufficient to run the software I use for both work and play (I have a separate Profile for work and for Gaming) during that time period under Win7 and win10 both.

For all intents and purposes my Software footprint has not changed from the days I run Windows 7. Of course I updated the version of Adobe Suite, MS Office, Libre Office, Chrome, Firefox and the various supporting programs I use for work and play, but my usage has not changed. In other words, I have not started 3D animation or Video Editing or anything memory intensive or different from what I have been doing for ages, nor am I running any new software or driver I did not run before. Yet this is what happened:

Until 1 year ago: I used Windows 7 Pro and I never saw a low memory warning. I often had 2 or 3 Adobe suite programs open, along with 2 or 3 browsers (each with several tabs), XAMP to run my local Apache server, MS Ocffice 360 with often at least one document each in Word and Excel. Frequently I'd have Libre Office CALC open as well as I prefer it to excel for some tasks. Then I had printer, scanner drivers, AV and several anti-malware programs like Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes, and more. Memory issues were the last thing on my mind. Bloating and some slow downs were there, but mostly because I had too small a SSD for what I was doing.

6 Months+ ago: I upgraded to Windows 10 installing it over Windows 7. While running this configuration I updated from a 250GB SSD to a 500GB SSD as I was running out of space (even though I usually install most programs on my D drive and all my document on what I call my Z drive. Miraculously, I was able to transfer my OS to the new 500GB SSD without bricking both the 250GB and 500GB Samsung SSD drives (as it happened to me before, good thing I am fastidious about backups). Again, I have never seen a single low memory warning even though on some occasions I run a lot of programs concurrently with multiple Chrome and Firefox windows.

2 Months ago: I decide to do a Clean installation of Windows 10 on my 500GB SSD because I suspect an infection and because I thought it was time I run a clean and fresh version of Win10 without the baggage of Win7. The installation was no more painful than usual, and since I subscribe to the Adobe suite, MS Office, Steam for all my gaming (except iRacing) and Chrome and Firefox offer a handy restore when using them with an account, I am confident that I installed a fresh copy of the same software I have always run but on a much less bloated system.
This windows 10 installation was not done over a Windows 7 shell.

After a couple of weeks of regular operations I saw the Low Memory Warning below for the first time.

Below is what my memory looked like shortly after the alert appeared.

Since then, things, if anything, have gotten worse. If I run Chrome with a dozen or so tabs, Dreamweaver and then open photoshop, Windows 10 will tell me to close Photoshop and some of the Tabs in Chrome will crash (Gmail almost always but often just random tabs I have open). In the past I could run the same programs, plus illustrator, MS Word and a couple of other browser open without even a slow down.

I think it is important to note again that my hardware and my software usage pattern have not changed (if they have is toward having fewer programs open at once because of the stupid warning). I have had this machine for the last 5 years (allowing for various upgrades) and I have had it running Windows 10 for months without encountering this memory issue until I did a fresh install.

Naturally, I updated my software in the meantime, but I doubt that is the cause of what I am seeing.

I would love to know what is going on and what may be causing this. I would gladly do a fresh installation if I were sure it would get rid of this problem, but until I identify the cause, I don't think it's worth it. If I were to experience the same issue after the pain of installing windows again and reconfiguring all my programs I'd go mad.

Thank you for suffering with me through this post. Again, I apologize to the OP, but I suspect that if we can find a cause it will solve his problem too and my experience makes for a much better baseline as it takes the hardware and software out of the equation, at least to a degree.

I've seen similar problem on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 about six months and a year ago respectively.
In the case of Windows 7 it was Avira antivirus went mad. Don't know what it was, just reinstalled it and it was OK. Problem looks very similar to OP's.

In the case of Windows 8.1 problem occurs just a few times when tried to connect to a specific site with personal certificate. Memory just went nuts (accumulating to the top). Never resolved the issue and have to reinstall Windows. Actually install fresh Windows 10 :)

Try to reinstall antivirus, if you use one. My second choice would be to switch to Insider program and go to slow ring. It is very stable now and has most of the bugs fixed.

1st Post : I have tried this, to no success sadly. Not necessarily sure what the problem is, if it's hardware or software related.
    2nd Post : I will give this a try/check. Thank you!
3rd Post : All good about the post. Unfortunately your problem sounds different than mine, in that, I only experience this issue once I have downloaded 10GB+ without restarting, and the memory usage is high on System and Compressed Memory only, which causes my computer to slow down and freeze until I have to force restart via power button, or if I get lucky and restart through the Windows Menu.
4th Post : An anti-virus can't be a problem for me for two reasons.
    1. This only occurs after downloading 10+GB's of data.
    2. I don't even use an Anti-virus aside from Microsoft Essentials.
    Thanks though!

Did you tried to run sfc /scannow in elevated command? just to check system files.

And also DISM Repair Windows Image

This is something I tried awhile back for other problems, but I haven't actually tried it recently. So I will do this as well.

This is an issue that is ongoing. I have found multiple threads, including on these forums. I am having the same issues on my ASUS system. (My Lenovo doesn't seem to have a problem.) The root cause though isn't the drivers or an app or utility. The root cause is the "System and Compressed Memory" appears to be a resource hog without any constraints. Ideally this is suppose to be a background service that simply compresses unused apps into memory until that memory is needed and then it should swap those apps to the swapfile. Ideally to speed the system and utilize memory better.

In reality it's beating the heck out of a lot of systems. My machine is a bit beastly with 8 cores and 32GB of RAM. So it's simply turning mine into a space heater from running the CPU at max clock speed while jumping cores and using only 8% of the CPU. (But making my CPU think it needs to be maxed out.)

The process needs fixed so it won't exceed a certain amount of resources to run and so it won't run but x amount of time when a machine is idle. Then it won't matter what drivers etc. you have installed.

I believe I solved this, at least for the ASUS. First, I did a vanilla install, no ASUS drivers other than my wireless adapter. Then I followed the instructions from the answer on this link: http://superuser.com/questions/10004...ry-compression I've had no problems since then.
