Not sleeping HDDs is not going to kill them much faster or even any faster, stress from starting and stopping them often is worse. It's just power saving feature, nothing to do with longevity.
What's that story about "Virtual Memory" on secondary drives ? Windows use "Virtual Memory" on only one specified drive, not on all of them at same time. It also has nothing to do with drive performance, only to supplement amount of RAM.
It's a good idea to move "Virtual Memory" to another disk only in case of very slow system disk and low amount of (free) RAM.

    1. Sure it will, "usage" of anything in life will "wear it out faster".... Hard Drives are not somehow "impervious" to wear and tear.
As to starting and stopping wearing something out likely faster, that's the old days. With computers that has long been a non-issue. The only exception is if your outlet somehow has a power-spike and fry's things but that shouldn't happen as long as you don't have crap wiring, have a good amount of surge protectors etc. Like, I use 3, the wall outlet surge protector and 2 powerful ones.

    2. So, no, it's not "just" a power saving feature. Things wear down, and doing things that will prevent that wear WILL make things last longer. Period.

    3. Well, this thread is about a problem with Secondary Drives starting up after sleep and causing the computer to fully FREEZE for some 3 sec's. Through my research, one of the possible solutions to this problem was "increasing" Virtual Memory. So, when I went there I saw that none of my secondary drives had it enabled. So, I decided to try and see if setting them all to be system managed would also fix the problem (btw I'm trying the Automatic Check Box now to see if that works the same as simply selecting each one and setting it, it seems to).

Anyway, by doing this I've stopped the freezing.

    4. Maybe, but it seems allowing Windows to manage the Paging file of "all drives" fixes the issue I'm having.
So, I prefer that then to leave my drives running ALL the time, especially if they aren't being used. I use my computer a lot, so giving things a break is what works for me, especially when some of my drives I plan on keeping for MANY MORE years, which btw I already have.

Most wear sensitive part on a HDD is head(s), every time HDD wakes up has to go thru self check routine moving heads from one and to other several times. Spindle motor draws power several times higher than when running which heats it up higher than normal and puts more stress on it. Do what ever you want with your HDDs but I never lost a HDD because of motor spindle wearing out even as all my drives are spinning constantly 24/7 but did have head failures. Even at sleep mode, whole HDD is fully energized save for motor.

    UPDATE...

So, it appears the problem isn't "fully" solved with enabling Virtual Memory on all drives.
However, it seems it "almost" entirely fixed it. But I have had I think just a couple of freezes since my last post. (I'm on my computer all the time btw.) In contrast, before I would freeze like once every 30 minutes or something.

So, it's possible "increasing" the Virtual Memory might do the trick since enabling virtual memory on all drives almost fixed it.
I'll try that next, though might be a bit, busy.

keeping an eye here, as if adding virtual memory or anything will afford me the ability to switch back to IRST drivers without the 5 second freeze at power up, id be pretty elated. keep us posted

Any update on this? ever find your way around it entirely?

I have too many large disks (some that go unaccessed for lengths of time) to keep them all spinning perpetually so turning off sleep isnt an option.

I just tried the newest IRST drivers in hopes that it was ironed out of the past half a year. Nope, same business. Immediately rolled back to the newest IRST(e) which dont do this as I mentioned. Still id prefer to be on the right driver.

Did a quick google and this turned up, I had forgotten we even had this discussion.
