..to be clear, I meant clicking continuously is a bad sign.

Also as you may have found, you're not the only one experiencing this with WD Green drives:
WD Green drive seems to be slowing whole computer down [Solved] - Western Digital - Storage

Since you are using Caviar Green drives (which you should not be doing for a Linux RAID setup, honestly) and already are at it, make sure to disable the power saving features, especially the IntelliPark feature.

Western Digital Caviar Green hard drive slow, causes crashes... - HP Support Forum - 792689
+ the comment that it was never meant for use as a primary drive but as mass storage.

It's normal to click few times when starting or waking up, it's doing self check every time. You may also want to check S.M.A.R.T. values. checkdisk and defragment drive/s.
Drives are defragmented periodically and currently running a test using the WD diagnostic utility

Just check it good for bad, relocated and weak sectors (SMART will show all of that). If it's all clear or in good shape you are OK. Some drives are just naturally noisy.

Sorry for not commenting on that,I decided to look into that after confirming if the windows power saving option was the reason

I am currently running an extended test on the WD Green

The thread is missing the point. Wth does the entire operating system (which is installed on a SSD on DIFFERENT controller interface (NVME PCI EXPRESS in my case) freeze by the spin up for up to 3 seconds when im doing things that do NOT envolve the secondary mechanical storage disk on the SATA port. I didnt even access file explorer or anything all i did was browsing on chrome which is installed on SSD.

This is just garbage OS /bios interrupt management. Is there no way to smooth this out without disabling power management for the HD?
    WD BLACK here.

Yes, pretty annoying, it's all or none to sleep or wake up. There are some WD Green drives that have own power saving feature but they wake up too..

are you using IRST drivers? As this happens to me when using them. I was stuck using IRST(e) which didnt present the issue, or the microsoft standard which also do not.

otherwise, any time a drive wakes, entire system freezes for a few seconds. Its obnoxious.

I'm having this EXACT same problem...

This is clearly a DEFECT with the latest Windows 10, because I've NEVER had this happen to me in my life.
I'm going to try and set my Hard Drive power Management to "Never" powerdown, but that IS a very BAD thing.

This is going to kill my hard drives much faster, thus this absolutely NEEDS to be fixed!

BTW, through more internet searching I found that my secondary hard drives don't have "Virtual Memory" set on them, so I set them for the System to automatically manage their virtual memory, and am going to see if that works instead of forcing my hard drives to never sleep (another option is to "increase" their virtual memory manually). Let's hope this works, will let you all know.

UPDATE: Okay, I've verified it... Enabling Virtual Memory (setting for automatically manage) for my Secondary Drives (it wasn't enabled, only my primary drive have VM set) fixed it.

No more 3 or so second "freezes" when the drives started up. FIXED!
