You are doing FILE backup. Yes ?
    Actually, I'm not 100% certain.

I just launched Windows Back-up & Restore, changed the settings and pointed it to the flash drive. I was assuming it was an image.

I was asking about system Image backup which requires NTFS format.
On that same FAT32 flash drive, I do routinely make image back ups using both AOMEI and Macrium, so it does seem to work fine in other formats.

Yes, I guess we were. Apologies, but I'm not too familiar with Windows Imaging.

In Win 10, image backup requires NTFS format.................
This I'm not so sure about, unless I'm missing something again. As mentioned, I routinely make both AOMEI and Macrium back ups on my FAT32 flash drive.

Windows Image Backup will create a System Image Backup on a thumb drive as per @b1rd's link but you won't be able to restore from it.

I don't see USB Drive as an option. You chose hard drive.

    Thank you.
In first post I did say I am using a 1 TB ext. hdd for image backup.
MY question is about why I cannot do so in an USB flash drive.

So, It insists on using either a hard drive or DVDs, or network location, but no USB.

Give up David, and stop using that crippled Windows Backup. :) Download Macrium Reflect, like everyone is asking you to do.
At least, try it out.....it can resore, backup, complete OS images. Without making you jump thru hoops..... :)
