No refresh after delete

I am sure lots of people have already mentioned this but I am presuming there is a very simple fix. If I delete or move items in win 10 they stay visible in the folder until I refresh.

Could someone say what the fix is for this?

It was a minor issue to start with but it is now interfering with fast operation of using the OS. If you see stuff in a folder then you presume it is there! Trying to delete things that do not exist is becoming a recurring theme now.

That's not my experience, except if I use the search box, search for sthg, then delete it. In that case the search results are no refreshed and the deleted item remains visible.

Can occur because of an invalid share, apparently.

If I have a folder window open in explorer and delete things or move them they often stay in the folder but are not really there. It is not to do with searching - it is a real bug. It never happened in win 7, ever. I have sometimes had to refresh the "Computer" screen for it to show the drive capacities: 173GB free etc. That is not a big deal though.

I have noticed that it is not consistent. It does it enough to be annoying - that much I know. I have not noted exactly at which point it does it. It is an SSD so I do not know if that has anything to do with it. I presumed win10 was SSD ready as opposed to windows 7 and 8.

The solution for me to this was to go into File Explorer: File -> Change Folder and Search Options -> Search and then click the "Restore Defaults" button.

That immediately solved the issue for me where Windows 10 doesn't refresh after creating a new file or deleting a file.

I've joined this forum to share some info that I thought was relevant to this topic.

Ever since the initial conversion from 7 to 10, my folders had been having problems displaying their contents - I'd open a folder, and the refresh bar along the top would never completely finish refreshing; hitting F5 might make it refresh, but when adding files to an opened folder, they wouldn't appear in the view until F5 was hit again. It would get progressively worse through the day, with folders eventually not displaying at all, making my PC virtually unusable. Reboots sometimes solved the problem, but it soon returned - it was driving me bonkers! My processor was also working quite hard all the time, as though it was constantly working to index the hard drive contents - or so I thought. I'd put it down to some kind of corruption in the folder/file indexing system, and hoped with each Win10 update that it would be fixed, but to no avail.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago ... I was pondering another problem I'd had for a long time: the icons on my desktop weren't displaying correctly. They would often lose their little "shortcut" arrow, or just display a blank rectangle - so I looked for an icon cache rebuilder, as I thought the cache might be corrupted. I found a free utility, and it rebuilt both the icon and thumbnail caches in seconds, with no problem. After a reboot, it worked OK for a day or so - but then they started not displaying correctly again.

Then another thought struck me: could this problem be related to Carbonite, my remote backup facility that adds little coloured dots to the icons of files that have been backed up? (It adds a green dot for a file that's been backed up, an amber dot to a file that hasn't yet been backed up, and a green/amber dot to folder icons where some, but not all, the folder's contents have been backed up.) So I opened Carbonite, and unchecked the box that adds the dots, rebuilt the caches yet again, rebooted - and BOTH problems have gone away!

It was also the root of the folder display problem - Win10 couldn't cope with the Carbonite dots overlaid on the icons, and this was causing it to constantly try to refresh the folder contents to try to find the icons to display.

I contacted Carbonite to let them know what I'd discovered - they weren't interested in offering a fix, but did provide this information:

"I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your dots reflecting accurately. The issue would not be with Windows 10, but generally computers come pre-loaded with some programs that can conflict with the Carbonite dots. Even if you're not using the programs, such as DropBox or OneDrive, these programs use overlays. Microsoft allows 15 overlays and they reserve 6 for themselves. These other programs, as they are pre-loaded, often are set with a higher priority over these overlays. This is what causes the Carbonite dots to be inaccurate and not able to update properly. While I understand your frustration with this, we are not able to control the number of overlays that are allowed for your PC."

Interesting info about Win10 that I didn't know before - but not something that I've ever come across in the Carbonite so-called Help screens!

My PC now runs faster, the processor's not so busy all the time, folders and files display faultlessly - it's almost like using a new machine now! And to think I was on the point of abandoning it and buying a new one because I thought the corruption was so deep in the operating system I'd never be able to repair it!
