Is Win-10's CHKDSK utility any more superior than that of Win-7

Is Win-10's CHKDSK utility any more superior than that of Win-7 as far as the ability to check files and repair Windows drives/partitions/boot records?

I have a bootable Win-7 repair disc and I have a Win-10 bootable repair disc. So I can boot either and run CHKDSK from command line to check , say, external HDD ( with NTFS).

Win-10 one is 10 years younger/newer So should be better? More capable? Faster or more rigorous?

Nothing has changed with that tool, much from the XP one.

Windows 10 is not younger or newer. It has been in testing for over 3 years, before it was released.

Microsoft retained a lot of old legacy items.

This may surprise some people but Microsoft does not have unlimited resources. As such these resources must be directed where they will do the most good. Windows 10 is a large and ambitious project that is in active development and requires many resources. And there is Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, plus server operating systems that need to be supported. And as any professional programmer will agree, maintaining existing software tends to be more expensive in time and effort than creating it. Windows contains a large number of command line tools that although written years ago continue to serve the designed purpose quite well. It is difficult to justify the time and effort to update old programs that have no real need to be updated when there are pressing needs elsewhere.

    No?

So, the answer to my question is "NO". Isn't it?

    No, it's yes apparently :)

New options in 10 compared to 7....

    NTFS only switches
    • /scan Runs an online scan on the volume.
    • /forceofflinefix (Must be used with "/scan") bypass all online repair; all defects found are queued for offline repair (i.e. "chkdsk /spotfix").
    • /perf (Must be used with "/scan") uses more system resources to complete a scan as fast as possible. This may have a negative performance impact on other tasks running on the system.
    • /spotfix (Must be used with "/scan") uses more system resources to complete a scan as fast as possible. This may have a negative performance impact on other tasks running on the system.
    • /sdcleanup Garbage collect unneeded security descriptor data (implies /F).
    • /offlinescanandfix Runs an offline scan and fix on the volume.

    FAT/FAT32/exFAT-only switches
    • /freeorphanedchains Frees any orphaned cluster chains instead of recovering their contents.
    • /markclean Marks the volume clean if no corruption was detected, even if "/F" was not set.

It looks like a new functionality comparing with Win-7. How to get the same result with Win-7?

You could boot from windows 10 ISO and then run chkdsk from command prompt.

Replacing chkdsk.exe and chkdsk.exe.mui in the Windows 7 system32 directory with the Windows 10 versions might work but I don't know what the consequences of doing that might be.

What I meant was "how to achieve the same result with native Win-7 only commands/utilities"

You cannot. Windows 7 just got adopted in the Enterprise, so now it is mainly keeping it secured, no other changes to any utilities.
