Automatic disk defrag every 5 minutes when idle

Every time i leave my computer idle for 5 minutes, disk defragmenting starts acting up. It never did this on Windows 7, and its very annoying. This causes my fan to speed up and it stays that way until i give it some input.

I always put my computer to sleep when I'm done using it, and would rather defragment manually. I want to turn this 5 minute defragging off, but how?

I've disabled the automatic defrag and run it manually once a week.

Open the defrag program and turn off scheduled defrag.

    Hi Double,

The defrag is set up in Task Scheduler. Look at the settings and see if they are reasonable. For comparison I have posted mine for you to see:

Possibly your PC had already started a defrag and is trying desperately to finish it!

Thanks, I never knew this existed here. I could only find the Disk Defragmenter program.

Good point. If that's the case, it's unfortunate that it's never able to finish because I don't give it the opportunity to--that's why I do it manually in the first place. I may leave it alone for a few hours, then turn it off. Still, I don't really care how banged up my hard drive is, it shouldn't run automatically unless I explicitly want it to. I don't remember Windows 7 ever doing it automatically like this.

I don't recall whether W7 did have automatic defrag by default but it was always possible to set it up. I think having the defrag happen by default works for some systems that can cope with the extra workload but for you I think you should turnoff the auto schedule and run it manually once a week or so. Post #2 shows you how.

I turned off Disk Defragging as shown below, but nothing has changed.

Every 5 minutes the computer still acts up. Why?

I'm bumping this because I have the exact same issue as described here. If I leave the PC alone for more than a few minutes, svchost (defrag.svc) appears in the resource monitor and it starts defragmenting. I have it disabled in the task scheduler, just like the image above.

Why is this always running without my permission? I want to defrag manually when it's convenient, not when my PC wants to.
