Problems right after installing Windows 10

Hello everyone,

The moment I installed windows 10 from windows 8.1 I noticed a lot of problems. The boot time took 3.5 times longer the very first time booting the computer with 10. Even after disabling/enabling 'fast boot'.
20% of the time whenever I shut the computer down it decides to reboot it instead. Then I have to shut it down again to shut it down.
80% of the time the sound stops working at random moments together with the task bar. No left clicks work on the right side buttons (including the sound control one) and the windows start menu button on the left. This sometimes happens when the system just got to the desktop. (the button to show the desktop on the very right does work and the quick launch buttons on the left do work)

sfc scan shows no errors.
I also tried the powershell command to recover apps which doesn't work.

4790K
16 GB RAM
560 GTX SE
3 hard drives of different brands and sizes

Hi, welcome to tenforums. You wouldn't be here if you were unlucky with Win 10.
I also had a bit of a fight with my upgrade from 8.1, but symptoms not quite as bad as yours.

You might want to try booting to safe mode (e.g. via SHIFT + restart and navigating the lengthy menus or via msconfig - there are details in one of the tutorials - see Tutorials, above) and seeing if you can boot and restart cleanly.

If so, also have a look at your event log, and see if you can pick out anything significant.

Your problems may have more than one source, but I'm betting you have some sort of driver issue.. a video card driver problem is not uncommon. But that can only be an unjustified guess.

If safe mode works, move on to a clean boot. (That begins to eliminate the effect of installed programs).

If any symptoms disappear as a result, you can proceed with a process of elimination.
However, a clean boot includes your drivers.

Thanks for the reply. I disabled some startup programs and did a safe boot and it seems gone for now.
Before, it sometimes seems fixed for a few weeks and just comes back.

Hoping for the best.

Ok, so you can enable (cautiously) more startups until the problem recurs.. assuming it's consistent and reproducible. That way you can identify the culprit. Hopefully.

As regards your slow boot issues, that's another problem most likely, and one quite a number of people have encountered with build 10586 (i.e. people using build 10240, the first consumer release) upgrading to 10586 found their boot time longer.

The problem got back today before I even enabled anything in the startup programs again.

Ok, it's a recognised issue with no clear resolution, I think. Generally reported since build 10586.

You're also not the only one reporting problems with left/right clicks not always responding- there are 2+ threads on that.

Sorry I can't offer a solution.
Also beware that, for example, re-registering all Win 10 apps can lead to a set being strangely disabled. This used to be a fix that was reliable, but seems not now. I experienced that myself with exactly the same outcome as someone else, and recovered using my most recent disk image.

(You might actually be better off with build 10240...

I found out that some people were able to fix the problem by running the following command:

ren %windir%\System32\AppLocker\Plugin*.* *.bak

Though, for me, it says it can't find the file

I think that last idea is related to universal apps being broken e.g. after using a powershell command (which used to work but now doesn't - MS puzzled) and restoring the apps folder from a recent image or backup.

Here's what I suggest to try to separate hardware/driver issues from issues related to programs installed and inherited from Win 8.

1. Get a copy of Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect (both free) and create a disk image of your OS partition or disk. Make sure to create the boot disk or medium for the disk imaging program.
2. Do a clean install of Win 10.
3. See what problems you then experience.

If you can then resolve some of these, you can create an image of that, restore the previous image, and hopefully apply what you've learnt.

You may have a combination of driver and/or 3rd party conflicts.

Hi Seren,

I had a similar problem, sometimes Windows 10 would boot up quickly and work fine, and other times it would be slow to boot, and sluggish to navigate. Sure, you can try messing around with software fixes, but in my opinion the best solution moving forward is to create a Windows 10 installation USB/DVD and to reinstall Windows fresh (after backing up your old data).

You could also see it as an excuse to upgrade to an SSD if you haven't already, my system boots up in under 15 seconds now I've installed a Samsung EVO 850 :)

Sensible.. I want to see if Seren's any driver issues or incompatibilities with a clean install.. we'll see, hopefully. People don't want to clean install unnecessarily or frequently given the time it takes to configure things. I've ended up doing clean installs about once in 3 years or so.. either 'cos of major change (to 64 bits now) or a new laptop ('cos the old one broke).
