    optimize ssd or not

    Hi,

I'm reading all kind of things about obtimizing my ssd or not using Windows "Defragment and Optimize Drives".

Apparently there is or was a bug with Windows wrongly degramenting the ssd.

What should I do now ? Keep "Scheduled optimization" turned off for my ssds ? Or turned it back on ?

    Thanks

@trogne, Hello. The problem is fixed in the latest version of Windows 10 2004. The SSDs get defragd and trimd once monthly now. Leaving optimize on the default schedule is fine.

I don't know if this will help!

    It checks for installed WU's.

[1] Goto this TenForums link => Batch Scripts / Programs.
[2] Goto the heading WU [ Windows Update ] - Check For KB OR Uninstall KB . . .
[3] Download and Run the .bat file [ WU_Check_For_KB_OR_Uninstall_KB.bat ].

    I hope this helps!

    Try from admin powershell :
    Code:

It does not find the KB.

Maybe because I cleared the update history.

If I'm up to date with the latest Windows Update, can I assume that it is installed and that I can optimize the ssd safely ?

What is your Windows version from "winver" command?

    - - - Updated - - -

You can also check Defrag history:
"The Defrag log file is saved in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application, right click on Application, click on Filter Current Log, select Defrag in the Event sources drop menu, and click on OK."

    - - - Updated - - -

Verify it's not happening weekly anymore.

If your Windows Update is current, it should be fine.

    winver :
    Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1082)

    That's good ?

I will check next weeks the Defrag history, cause I just turned optimize on.

This problem was specific to Windows 10 2004 - you're running an older build which was never affected by the recent problem articles you may have read.

The lasted Windows 10 build is 19041.546

Yes, just accept its default weekly setting and let it get on with its job. it recognises SSDs and treats them correctly.

If you have set an SSD to be 'optimised' weekly by the Defragmenter, then it actually trims & defrags monthly.
This info is in defrag - Microsoft Docs under the sub-heading 'Scheduled task'
    - SSD defrag is also discussed in The real and complete story - Does Windows defragment your SSD - Scott Hanselman
-The situation is further complicated by the fact that, since Windows Vista & 7, Windows defragmentation has not bothered moving around blocks of 64MB or greater. So your files can remain fragmented to that extent. MS experimented and decided that its old practice of fully defragmenting files gained no benefit once lumps of 64MB were consolidated. - If you ever need to check that Trim is enabled, use Enable or Disable TRIM Support for Solid State Drives - TenForumsTutorials
The defrag & trim records are kept in Event viewer, Application log, Sources - Defrag, Defrag-Core and, as lxo7 post in TenForums illustrates, they can be accessed through PowerShell as well.
    - I have never managed to catch a record of anything other than trimming taking place but others have seen SSD defrag happening [shown in that lxo7 post]
