    Checking your disk.

I asked you to use 1 of these programs.
Check your disk- Crystal Diskinfo, Hard Disk Sentinel.
Please understand that those check the physical state of the entire physical disk.

chkdsk checks the file system on the partition on which it runs. That's not the whole disk.

These are entirely different things. A, then B.

    So
A Check your disk- Crystal Diskinfo, Hard Disk Sentinel.
B If ok from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan

    - you will not have the difficulty you reported before (which is entirely normal and requires the PC restart)

    Result right on screen.

    Look towards the bottom.

Advise if it passes or fails.

The PC was purchased new about 5-6 years ago.

I tried the chkdsk command but it's not running because the volume is used by another process.
There's no app running at all.
You didn't follow the command I gave you.
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart

Download extract and run CrystalDiskInfo. It's a portable. Doesn't need to install.

I found out that my wife's Thunderbird profiles use up most of the space on C.
How about if I increased the C partition to 200GB and moved the profiles to the E partition?
    Would tat help?

Or get a bigger hard drive? How many partitions are there? If C drive is nearly full that could be the cause. Could you screenshot the partitions in disk management?

    @esebm
Be careful! The last partition *.image (11,08 GB) contains probably a factory reset image. Any mistake can ruin your system. If you don't want the computer to be reset to the delivery status accidently. delete the last partition. But it's your choice.

The C: partition has 23G of free space. Plenty of space.

    Agree
I would say that the computer came with Win 7 or 8 as the MSR partition is 128M (typical Win 7) and not 16M as on Win 10.
If even it came with Win 10, after some years, Factory Recover partition is useless as Win 10 has been updated to new versions and you can always do a reset or even a clean install.

clutter can make pc slow over time , i use Revo uninstaller - tools - junk files cleaner - checkmark only C drive(in you case E drive also) - scan - then delete everything. (it takes awhile to scan)
then i use browser cleaner and clear everything (even if a browser isn't installed)
then i use windows cleaner and clear everything
then autorun manager and uncheck everything you think you dont want to start running in background (be wise here)

also check in settings - background apps - and switch apps off you don't want running in background

then of course cloning your HHD to a new SSD will make that machine fly again...

your wife will love you again

Megahertz: Yes, I did the chkdsk, CrystalDisk, scannow and everything came back fine.
That does mean that the HDD is still halfway decent, right?

3nd: I did most of that cleanup already.

Unfortunately, the apps open as slow as before.
Next thing I'm trying is moving the Thunderbird profiles to the E partition, maybe that will help.
So far, thanks for all the input, greatly appreciated.
