    This image shows that:
    - Drive 3 is a GPT drive.
    - As you have booted after the conversion from MBR to GPT it MUST have booted as UEFI-GPT and not as Legacy-MBR.
    - If you booted as UEFI-GPT the BIOS is set to boot as UEFI-GPT and Legacy-MBR.

If you want to enter BIOS, remove the power cord from the wall outlet, remove the CMos battery and wait 1 minuter, reinstall the CMos battery and start the computer. You should have access to BIOS pressing Del during POST.

That's encouraging - hopefully you're right that I am already in UEFI mode.

I tried removing the CMOS battery - twice. The first time I waited a couple of minutes before replacing it, the second time I waited 20 minutes. Both times I removed the power cord first. I still can't get to BIOS. If I hit Del during POST it just hangs (with a blank display). If I don't, it boots straight back into Windows.

I can warrant you that you're booting as UEFI-GPT. There is no way to a GPT drive to boot as Legacy.
Your BIOS seems to be corrupted.
It happened to mine twice. I was able to enter BIOS and do a BIOS reflash (flashing using same BIOS version)
You could boot from a USB drive and flash BIOS from there. I'm going to makes some search for you.

The problem is that I can't boot from a USB drive - if I insert a bootable USB (or optical) drive it is being ignored. If I hit F8 (or F10) to try to access the boot menu during startup I get the same old problem with a beep and then a blank display. I also tried the "Startup Settings" option in Windows Shift-Restart....Advanced settings. That resulted in a single beep, a blank display for about a minute, then a power down.

To flash a BIOS is a risky task. Your BIOS seems to be corrupted but your computer is booting and working. It is up to you to update your BIOS or not.

Never, ever, Run a BIOS update under Windows.

Download BIOS file F63 from https://download.gigabyte.com/FileLi...-elite_f63.zip
Extract all files to a folder named Update
Download BIOS file F65F from https://download.gigabyte.com/FileLi...6bg08_f65f.zip
Extract B450AORUSELITE.F65f to same Update folder
On this folder create a text file name: Update.txt and type:
    Efiflash B450AORUSELITE.F65f /C

Save Update.txt. If you see the file just as Update and not Update.txt Explorer settings is set to hide known extensions. You must be set to NOT hide known extensions.
    Rename Update.txt as Update.bat

Copy the Update folder to a Win 10 USB installation drive root.
Try to launch the BOOT menu (F12) during POST and Boot from the Win 10 USB installation drive.
If you can't launch the BOOT menu (F12) during POST you may have to remove the drive 3 (M.2?) so that the USB is the only boot able drive option.
When you boot from the Win 10 USB installation drive, at the Windows Setup screen, press Shift+F10 simultaneously to open a command line prompt.
    type
    Diskpart
list vol (take note of the USB drive letter)
    exit (to exit diskpart)
Z: (replace Z with the USB drive letter fond above)
    cd /Update
update.bat (it will launch the bios update. Don't do anything until it finish).
    Reboot and enter BIOS.

On Gigabyte, the boot menu is F12 not F8

So I ripped out the display adapter and the SSD. Managed to get to BIOS. Managed to boot to a WinPE USB drive. Tried to run efiflash.exe, and got told that the version of efiflash.exe was incompatible with the version of Windows that I was running???

Reflashed the USB stick with MS-DOS (using Rufus), rebooted. The machine wouldn't boot - it hung with a cursor on the screen. Reflashed and re-booted. Same thing.

    ???!!!!

If you can get into BIOS, run BIOS Q-flash and browse to B450AORUSELITE.F65f

OK I finally discovered Q-Flash - thanks. I wasn't aware that you had to type the name of the update file in the box (I was hoping to be able to browse to it). I eventually worked it out and finally got the BIOS upgraded. Now for the Windows 11 upgrade....
