Display Turn Off in Power Options Causing USB Disconnection

    Hello everyone,

I'm encountering a peculiar issue related to the Power Options settings on my Windows machine (Version 22H2). Whenever Windows automatically turns off my display, it seems to inadvertently cause the devices connected to my USB hub to disconnect.

Here's a more detailed description of the problem:
    1. Display Turn Off Issue: After Windows turns off the display, my USB-connected devices disconnect.
    2. Wake-Up Login Requirement: When I wake up the monitor with a mouse movement, I'm prompted to log back into Windows, as if the system had entered seep mode or logged off.

    Steps I've Taken So Far:
    • Set Power Options to never enter sleep mode.
    • Disabled hibernation and USB selective suspend.
    • Restored default power settings using "powercfg -restoredefaultschemes".
    • Imported power options from "Default_Power_Plans.zip" found on this forum.
    • Analyzed settings with PowerSettingExplorer, but nothing unusual was noted.
    • Checked the event log and Sleep Study report ("pwrcfg -systemsleepdiagnostics") for any signs of the machine being put to sleep, but found none.

Interestingly, this problem does not occur when I manually turn off the monitor. It only happens when Windows does it automatically. Also, this issue is not isolated to one machine; it's happening on several, which leads me to believe it's not a hardware issue.

I'm looking for any suggestions on how to further diagnose and resolve this issue. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Would that monitor happen to be a Touchscreen that in addition to the data and power cables also requires a USB cable for the Touch feature to work? I have a monitor like that.

My monitors aren't touchscreens. They do require a USB cable to allow the computer to control their color calibration. I have tried disconnecting their USB, same effect.

Thank you. I don't have "Require sign-in setting" in sign-in options. I just tried setting "powercfg /SETACVALUEINDEX SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_NONE CONSOLELOCK 0". I will see if that works.

The lack of a sign-in requirement on sleep leads me to think perhaps the PC is not going to sleep but is just being locked? I experimented with locking the screen and see somewhat similar behavior with my USB devices.

Do check if the computers are S0 Modern standby or S3 Sleep computers by running this command:-
    Code:
    PowerCfg -a
If they are S0 Modern standby computers, check their Bioses for a setting that disconnects USBs in low power states.

You haven't mentioned when the awkward behaviour started.
    - After a Windows update?
    - After a driver update?
    - After bios update?

    All the best,

The following sleep states are available on this system:
    • Standby (S3)
    • Hibernate
    • Hybrid Sleep

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
    • Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state.
    • Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state.
    • Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) The system firmware does not support this standby state.
    • Fast Startup This action is disabled in the current system policy.

    Hi,
    1. Your first post suggests the PC is entering sleep mode (if the monitor was simply being turned off, you wouldn't see a login prompt).
To cross check, get a copy of this:
    Download Don't Sleep - MajorGeeks
and use it to disable sleep.

You can then observe what happens when and if your monitor display appears to switch off.

    2. Have you tried unchecking this for your USB root hubs?

Did they all use the same monitor or same type monitor and cabling setups?

I've used many different monitors over the years. The current setup on the computer I'm using is 2 BenQ SW27U. On my other computer is an EIZO CG 319X and a BenQ 321C. All these monitors use a USB connection to control color calibration. However, I have had the same problems with different monitor setups. On the computer I am now using, I had been using an LG 27UK850 and a Dell P2415Q. On my other computer, I was using a single EIZO CG 319X, as well as a Samsung C49RG9 and a Dell U2518D.

Thank you for the suggestion! From what I have gathered using the software, you can EITHER use it to stop sleep states, or use it to generate sleep states. I wasn't able to figure out how to do both. So, I tried two experiments:
    1. Set up windows to turn off the monitor in 1 minute and set up DNS to block Standby/Hybrid/Hibernation, Shutdown, and Log-Off.
    2. Set up windows to never turn off the display and set up DNS to turn off the monitor in 1 minute.

In both experiments, I got the same result. The monitor turns off in one minute, and after 20 minutes, the USB device disconnects. In both cases, If I wake the monitor before 20 minutes, I get no lon-on screen. After 20 minutes, I do.

    2. Have you tried unchecking this for your USB root hubs?

My root hubs were unchecked, but I did have several generic hubs unchecked. I unchecked all USB hubs. No change.

One other thing I should have pointed out. The machine I am currently using is an "upgrade/clone" of the other machine I have, which was an "upgrade/clone" of an older machine I used to have. All three machines have (or have had) the same problem, even though they are all different motherboard and processor types. So, while I don't think it is a specific hardware-related issue, I do believe it is tied to a particular Windows configuration problem I have had for years.

With all the changes of the hardware and the problems still exist, the mention of clones suggests the problems are being copied computer to computer to computer, exactly copying is the way cloning works. I'd probably "bite the bullet" and do a full clean install to start over.
