Try the Restart my pc, first. The problem may just be a glitch.

If the problem continues, do a System Restore in the Advanced Repair Options.

Ghot's suggestion is supported by a tutorial in the searchable Tutorials section.
You will need to know your password.

    If that doesn't help.. then..
    - about how old is your PC? (I don't recognise the make, and with 4GB RAM I'm guessing older rather than newer.

Your specs have nothing on your disks. HDD? SDD? How many? Clues welcome.

    History:
    - when did it last boot ok?
    - what happened since then? (Update/power outage/cat walked over keyboard...)

You might try (on another PC) creating a bootable flash drive from Macrium Reflect (free).

That includes a useful Fix Boot utility.

Boot your PC from that into Macrium R, run the utility, and photograph and post what it reports.

Your system disk might be failing: to check
    - on another PC create and boot your PC from a live boot disk (Google if unfamiliar)
Then run e.g. Crystal Diskinfo (free) (SMART check).

    or
    - remove the system disk and connect it as a USB disk to another PC
Then run e.g. Crystal Diskinfo (free) (SMART check).

Thanks for the replies Ghot and dalchina,I did the restart and everything seemed ok but it now restarts every so often including whilst I was typing this email, although it seems perfectly ok for an hour or two.I only get the "Windows not loading"alert when I shut down and the next time I reboot. If it happens again I will try the system restore but the other suggestions are way above my comfort zone.

    Thanks.

Random restarts- that's now your key issue it seems.

    Again
    - about how old is your PC? (I don't recognise the make, and with 4GB RAM I'm guessing older rather than newer.

Your specs have nothing on your disks. HDD? SDD? How many? Clues welcome.

How many sticks of RAM do you have?

Have you checked your disk yet? Crystal Disinfo (free).

When that happens, is the shutdown sudden and abrupt, or does it seem to shut down normally?

One reason an unexpected restart could occur is if an update is being processed and you have not prevented restarts interrupting what you're doing.

When that happens, is the shutdown sudden and abrupt, or does it seem to shut down normally?

A simple step to stop that possibility is to set
    Active Hours
in Settings, if you haven't already done so. (Tutorial available).

However, it's much more likely that you have some kind of hardware problem.

How many sticks of RAM do you have?

Have you checked your disk yet? Crystal Disinfo (free). Just run it- instant display.

Boot to Safe Mode and leave your PC running for 'long enough'.

    Does it restart?

    Inspect
    a. Reliability History
    (search from taskbar search)
    Explore any red x's.

    b. Your event log - note the time a restart occurs, then look at the log for events around that time.

For this, use Fulleventlogviewer (free), which gives a simple linear list.

Random restarts could be due to anything - RAM, disk, PSU, other hardware issues, overclocking.. etc.
Trying to resolve it means trial and error and a process of

    simplify, substitute, eliminate, identify.

Or you could take it to a repair shop...
