Good... bad! Hope the image is recent...

Took a long time to get from the idea it was a general problem to something so specific... wasn't expecting quite that.

Suggest you convert the file or delete it.

Doe the problem file play normally?
No, but mediainfo return that use an HEVC codec.

I wanted to try changing the default application that opens mkv files, how do I do it?

the backup was from October, so I lost practically nothing. So lucky!

I tried to do a conversion using handbrake but it crashes. Can you suggest me another program?

If you can't even play the file (try VLC player e.g.) there's no point in trying to convert it.

    Where did it come from?

You've (we've) spent a lot of time on this- if it's just 1 duff file- delete it.

Changing default associations (various ways) - covered in tutorials in the searchable Tutorial section.

However, I have to thank you very much, I wouldn't have gotten there on my own. I tried other programs besides vlc and none worked.

    So I deleted it.

    1. Windows 10 has a memory leak apparently. That could fixed via editing the Registery via Regedit. I never did this as I have updated my windows 10. Maybe I did in the past but I did not

    2. Checkout "Shutup Windows 10" series. It is a free program that allows you to turn off various services, and settings. It comes in many flavors for whatever windows version you are using.

    3. Maybe something that is trigger in terms of "Task Scheduler".

    4. Another issue might be the "startup environment" where you need to disable something.

    5. I myself been playing around with Zune-player. It is micro-soft alternative to WMplayer. Honestly something is wrong where my computer hang when I attempt to check properties of files tied to it. That being said............. I am considering removing zune-player
but for now it is playing all those newer file-types where other media players struggle, and I changed the icons for one file which made all files under that player have the same icon. So I just click such file rather then looking at it's properties.

    6. My computer I have QT tool bar installed. What I am guessing is allowing me to view and play files in a preview-plane.

    7. If you just about give up on Explorer, you could use something like XYplorer. There are tons of Explorer alternatives and set custom icons. There are even guides to do away with the built in explorer.

    8. Lastly I suggest updating your machine. I do not like that option. I went from 1906-2004. My 1906 had memory hang ( computer would get slow ). Even now I have it cloned and in comparison there seems to be so many things loading. Just by updating to 2004 got rid of those hangs. It might be hard to update to the version you want because Microsoft limits our choice.

    9. Finally if all else fail I suggest a virus busting tool like Maleware Bytes demo version or Symvat ( froget the name ) to see if there is a virus or setting not correct.

    ...........

I had this problem before in the past. Another issue I still struggle with is the WLAN triggers high memory usage, so I keep that offline unless I absolutely need to use it
