    Thanks.

First, that's not the normal occurrence of explorer.exe

If you look further down, you should find that:
    explorer high cpu usage-1.jpg

Second, you may notice I have nothing using PC under services.exe
(I've not expanded that as you have in order to show explorer.exe)
If I do expand that– there’s no CPU usage.

Third, with Process Explorer running, I don't see anything that looks like what you’ve highlighted that’s using CPU time.

Can you capture a screenshot of Process Explorer when CPU usage is NOT high,
looking for anything like explorer.exe running as you show it
showing explorer.exe as I show it in my screenshot

What I don’t know is what the occurrence of explore.exe using CPU time is doing there or why it’s there.

Maybe someone will be able to deduce more from that.

As for Procmon... I can only suggest you do what you can to compare when usage is high with when it's not. I don't think posting its log here will help - I'm not an expert in using it. There is probably a guide if you search -see the MS site itself. It's non-trivial.

this is about 5 seconds when explorer is at about 50% of cpu

    explorer high cpu usage-image1.png

    strangely there is less activity.

Something strange happened to me. I clicked on a particular file and explorer completely stopped, not responding. The whole window turned grey. It is a video with MKV extension

It may be that file explorer is struggling to process metadata or thumbnails.

Is the high CPU use triggered when you look at certain folders- e.g. ones containing lots of media files?

Try increasing the icon cache size:
Change Icon Cache Size in Windows

    Then
Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10

Then do the check here and advise result:

explorer is there because when I restart it it goes somewhere else. At least I think so...

I think I deactivated the thumbnails from a link you provided. But I'm not sure

    I managed to isolate.

He does it to me with that file, even if it's just him. Maybe it's like you said, I also think it's trying to extract some metadata but it can't and it goes in a loop.

Isolate? What exactly? Do you mean you have found a connection between an event and high CPU usage?

Await answer to the question and confirmation you've done these and the result of the last:

844 is ok - nowhere near the limit.

Try associating the mkv file with a different program. That's a very useful discovery.

This can be done both with folders with many multimedia files, but also with just one multimedia file in particular.

    See latest animated gifs.

Now I'm also testing in safe mode.

Check if this happens only with a particular mkv file or files - i.e. see if you can find one where you don't see this problem.

cpu usage - Windows hangs on clicking/copying large MKV file - Super User

Doe the problem file play normally?

mkv is a container - there are numerous possible combinations of encoders. It seems some may result in high CPU usage in some cases.

So, I have other large mkv files and there are no problems. It only does this with that file. I still have to check if there are others.

The good news is that in safe mode everything works fine. The cpu doesn't increase even with that file.

the bad news is that the PC no longer starts after restarting normal startup. It gives me error 0xc000000e
