    computer freezing

My computer has gotten slow and sluggish and freezes for about 30-60 sec and then works. I did CHKDSK on startup and it was fine, also SFC file checker and MEMtest USB. I even put in a different HD that worked fine last Dec and that HD is doing the same. IN Task manager it shows 100% of Disk usage when I open Chrome even if it's onyl 1 tab. it's never done that before. Any ideas on what to check next?

In this guide, you will learn the steps to perform a clean boot on Windows 11 and Windows 10 to help you troubleshoot and determine conflicts in your setup.

Please post a screenshot of your task manager showing the disk transfer rate (Performance tab, Disk) as well as one showing the processes when this is happening. Thanks.

AVG had a screen open saying it updated my security, and CCleanner had a screen open wanting me to upgrade. When I closed these windows the Disk went down to 0% and hovered around 4-5% then jumped back up to 100%, then down below 5% - pretty erratic.

In my regular setup I had a 400 gig HD partitioned 80 and 320. Currently, I have only 1 HD in an 80 gig HD with only my C drive. I'm surprised I'm getting all this 100% disk activity. For about 9 months, I've opened task manager a lot, because with 8 Gigs of RAM using my EM Client email program and Chrome could make the RAM go up too much causing a crash. So I've been careful about opening too many tabs.

I'm now monitoring the Temp. It looks fine. Last night I ran the Memtest from a USB stick for 12 hours with no errors, this is surprising since in the past I've had as many as 7 errors.

Also this is a 14 yr old computer. Considering that its doing the same thing with a different HD with a image of my C drive from Dec 2022. It seems that eliminates the variables of hard drive or OS problems causing this. Is there a general computer test?

    Thanks. I asked for

your task manager showing the disk transfer rate (Performance tab, Disk)
Also you need to arrange the Disk column in the Processes screenshot high to low by clicking on the column header - so the one using the disk the most is at the top.

My guess is the disk is shown at 100% usage when very little data is being transferred.

If so, there are various threads on tenforums you can find where this has been reported previously - mostly older now.
    Search for e.g.

    100% disk usage
    low disk transfer rate

    Look for solved threads.

Also as a matter of routine get a copy of Hard Disk Sentinel (full functional trial) - portable version available- simply run that and look at the GUI. Green is good- otherwise post a screenshot.

I looked at the Disk column in the Processes screenshot high to low and clicked on high. Even at Disk 100% there was nothing showing much activity, nothing above 5%. I think you're right - disk is shown at 100% usage when very little data is being transferred. I'll check out the other treads and get the Hard Disk Sentinel

Thanks. Note that HDS may show the disk as good, but the problem is still there, so something else.
FYI: I've even seen HDS report on cabling issues.

I installed HDS and this is what is says about my original 400 gig HD with 2 partitions. This is my normal setup, not the 80 gig that I tried yesterday. Here's the message:
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Problems occurred between the communication of the disk and the host 96 times.
In case of sudden system crash, reboot, blue-screen-of-death, inaccessible file(s)/folder(s), it is recommended to verify data and power cables, connections - and if possible try different cables to prevent further problems.
More information: Hard disk case: communication errors

    No actions needed.

I'm still getting the 100% Disk sometimes, especially when first opening Chrome, but then it calms down. Currently, it's 3% with 17 tabs open on chrome, EM Client open. I'm beginning to think it's possibly a cable problem, since I'm switching cables whenever I try a new HD. Right now I'm not getting these weird freezes like yesterday.

Certainly a problem you need to resolve. With such an old M/B that may well not be the only issue though.

Yesterday my computer acted ok, even though there was on occasional DISK spike to 100% always when I was pushing it some by opening Chrome, but no freezing or sluggishness.

Before going to bed last night, I swapped my DVD SATA and power cable to my HD and pushed on the connections on the motherboard in case something was loose. Today it auto booted and an hour later I was up and it all looked fine with the task manager near 0% Disk and EM Client open. I then opened Chrome and the Disk went up to 100% and the power usage turned red saying very high and after about 15 sec Disk came down gradually and was hovering around 5%. Power usage went back to low.

So I still have the problem but so far no freezing of the computer and it acting extremely sluggish. I saw some of the other 100% Disk threads and wonder if it's the page file. How can I delete and reset the page file?

After seeing a thread, I installed ADK tools. It seems very involved and complicated. If you know of a particular tool I should use to monitor performance, let me know
