    How to fix bad blocks

    Hi

    I am running W10 x64 V22h2 build 19045.2234 fully updated.

I have an attached hard drive to use for backups of my C drive.

Recently my Backup software has failed suggesting that the attached disk
    could be causing an error.

I ran a scan with HDDScan and it come up with Bad Blocks.

How can I fix the bad blocks.

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Daniel

If Hard Disk Sentinel sees the drive successfully (full functional trial) then it will give you an instant very informative appraisal.
That will tell you the extent of the problem with your drive and its anticipated lifetime.

If too many blocks are failing- well, get another drive. Normally HD firmware handle occasional bad blocks automatically and reallocate from a spare pool. Too many bad blocks- and the drive is dead.

Which backup program are you using? You don't want to take risks with your backup.

    Start with diagnostic tests.

If you can boot Windows then run:

HD Tune (free or trial version)
    a) Health
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

Bad blocks are hardware fault you can't fix them when it finds them it remaps to engineer tracks so you don't see them only when that's full do you see them so by then you have a lot

From an elevated command prompt, run chkdsk x: /r
Where x: is the drive letter of the drive in question.

chkdsk deals with the filesystem on the partition(s) on which it's run.

This needs the whole disk inspecting, not just accessible partitions, so 3rd party utilities first.

And note there's a likelihood of reduced lifetime- incipient failure.

Three weeks ago you started this thread How to test a hard drive that is attached by USB indicating problems in formatting a new-bought external HDD/SSD. You never replied to the posts therein and left it hanging.

Is the drive you are talking about now the same one?

I am wondering whether you will respond to the posts here also.

As already mentioned, bad clusters, bad blocks, bad sectors etc are hardware failures that can't be fixed.
Chkdsk only checks logical corruption on a partition.
You need to test the whole drive.
    Use HDSentinel (trial)
    or
    Crystal disk info (free)

Definitely the already mentioned HD Sentinel to monitor but even better is to act swiftly! Get a new storage device and clone all your data over!

Here is a totally coincidental to your subject question disk failure that just happened in one of my machines in the last five days after over five years of flawless operation, A real-life example how quickly they can die!
