High disk usage after latest Windows update

Good afternoon. I was running windows normally until they tossed a Windows update into my computer about a week ago. Now everything is running slowly. I constantly have to reboot my computer to make anything operate correctly. I've tried virtually every online solution to fix this problem. But nothing seems to work. My Windows version number is 22H2.

Welcome to the forum. If you open taskmanger what is using all the disk? Check what's running at start-up it gives you the impact on each thing. Do you use OneDrive the update deletes OneDrive files and updates it so if you have a lot of files it can sync lots of files if it's running you can click on it and stop sync for X hours see if that solves it

Hi, if you care to look at your Update History, you could perhaps actually tell us which update you're referring to.

Note: the forum asked you for your FULL build number using winver. Like 19045.3208 for example.

How much free space do you have on C: ?

Samuria refers to your task manager.

Kindly post a screenshot with significant columns organised high to low by clicking on the appropriate column header.

To post a screenshot (jpg/png) use forum features as per the tutorial thus:

    Thanks.

Once you've done that, you could of course try using a System Restore point if you have one created that far back and see if there's any change.

Let me start with the build of Windows. It is 19045.3208

My system specks are as follows. I own an Acer Aspire R5-571T. It contains an ASUS motherboard. It has an Intel Core i5-7200 CPU @2.59Ghz. It has 8GB of RAM. I will now send you tow photos. The first is the task manager and how it states that I'm using 50% Hard Drive. The second photo shows that my hard drive is reading and writing 100% of the time. This is very odd to me. If there is anything else you need from me, feel free to ask me.High disk usage after latest Windows update-task-manager-1.jpgHigh disk usage after latest Windows update-task-manager-1.jpgHigh disk usage after latest Windows update-task-manager-2.png

Thanks. Yep, you have a discrepancy.. there's very little happening with your disk- yet it's regarded as 100% in use.

For whatever reason you've encountered the problem of a restricted maximum disk transfer rate.

I note you have 2 disks.
First run a disk check - get a copy of Crystal Diskinfo (free) to check the smart params on BOTH disks.

Second, as asked, please look at your Update History and confirm which update(s) you've most recently received.

Also look at driver updates at the bottom of that.

Now please tell us the MODEL of your laptop and its approximate age.
(Click 'My Computers' below my post to compare spec details).

Having looked up your build number in the News section, one of those should be
    July 11, 2023 - KB5028166 (OS Builds 19044.3208 and 19045.3208)

I'm at work right now. But I can tell you the following information. I have an Aspire R 15 and it was manufactured in 2016. I will tell you more tonight.

I wanted to let you know that the second hard drive turned out to be the SD card I had in my card reader slot. Once it was removed, the Hard Disk usage rose to 100%

Furthermore, my computer is stating that it's attempting to install an new update but it hasn't been successful yet. You can see this in the two photos I've included with this post.High disk usage after latest Windows update-windows-update-1.pngHigh disk usage after latest Windows update-windows-update-2.png

Your Task Manager shots are of no use, you need to sort the Disk Usage column. Click on the Column title to sort so that maximum usage is at the top.

That will then display the processes involved.

It is perfectly normal to have disk usage at 100% during large Windows updates. It lasts for quite a while when a Laptop has a HDD.

The failed cumulative update maybe the result of your interruptions, does not really matter as it will be done again.

You could try the Troubleshoot link > Additonal troubleshooters > Wndows updates.

The other "error" message for "PC not meeting requirements for Windows 11" would have been there for sometime that will just stay. It is only information not an error.

I finally ran crystal diskinfo. And I have the results from this. I had to cold start my computer to get it responsive enough to run Crystal Diskinfo. And I got another screenshot of my task manager with the disk usage in proper order. I hope all of this helps.High disk usage after latest Windows update-task-manager-3.pngHigh disk usage after latest Windows update-crystal-diskinfo.jpg

    Hi

as that update has been "installing" for >>well over 24hrs<<, i've gotta assume its causing your problem, it seems to be stuck between downloaded/installings, hence 0%.

    try Brinks WU reset tool

@Helmut- it was obvious from the screenshot showing the transfer rate when usage was 100% what was happening.

Thank you for your reply and screenshots.
We now can see there's a failing disk. (Crystal Diskinfo).

You should STOP USING THAT DISK
I assume the disk you show as 'Caution' is your system disk.

    Forget Windows Update.

What you need to do is ensure you have a backup of everything that's important.

Have you been using 3rd party disk imaging regularly and routinely as is endlessly recommended here?
(Please don't, as many do, ignore this question).
    E.g. Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backupper....

If you have- great, - get a new disk, and restore the most recent image of all your O/S partitions to it.

Note: Hard Disk Sentinel (full functional trial) -SSDs too- use the portable version on a flash drive, say.. will give you a much more understandable comment on your disk including projected life.
