    Can't delete temp files

    Hello.

So, I just noticed having a huge temp file of 300GB that consumed all of my space and I am not able to delete it. I've tried deleting it in normal mode and in safe mode, using normal deletion and cmd but I get ''access denied " everytime. The files that cannot be deleted are usually appcompat.txt or svchost.exe.

    Anything I can try?

    Welcome to tenforums.

    svchost.exe is a system file.

What exactly are you looking at? A screenshot might help.

Deleting something you shouldn't- that is protected for a reason - could leave you coming back here having to use a different PC to access the forum!

As for deleting the 'undeletable' - this question has been asked many times. So once again, you can:
    - boot to a command prompt, then delete anything
    - boot your PC from a live boot disk, or a Win 10 install disk and hence to a command prompt

As Windows isn't running you can delete anything.

A program such as Emco UnlockIT (free) can
    a. try to unlock whatever is denying access, if that's another program rather than permissions, and then delete it
    or
    b. offer to schedule the file or folder for deletion on Windows restart- when again, Windows isn't running.

I think you're trying to delete system files.

The two folders that has temp files and sub folders are:
    - C:\Windows\temp
    - C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Temp

    Thank you for your answers.

As for the files, they are currently found at the two temp files locations: C:\Windows\temp and C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Temp with millions of duplicates that cannot be cleaned

You have methods above which will allow you to delete them.

However, that your temp storage is so large suggests there is an underlying problem.

Have you disabled any services? Tweaked Windows in some way that might affect normal maintenance?

I will try that as soon as i get home.

As for the main problem, Nothing out of the ordinary was done as the computer is only used for word and autocad work and it is not even connected to the internet. So my guess would be an infected floppy disk maybe. and I dont even have enough space to install a new scanning software due to the space being ''eaten'' by temp files

EDIT: is booting in command prompt the same as booting in safe mode?

No. And in this case you don't want to boot to Safe Mode as Windows is running... which is exactly what you want to avoid... to avoid something blocking the deletion.

Likewise, you don't want to just open a command prompt whilst Windows is running..... that would be self-defeating. for the same reason.

What's your Windows build number? The forum prompted you for that when you wrote your first post.

Should it turn out you repeatedly have this problem, a repair of some sort will be needed.
