Strange cursor problem

The problem also occurs with the touchpad, so It's not the mouse.

Are you using the Touchpad or PS2 Mouse ?

You could try updating the Mice and Other Pointing Devices Driver via Device Manager to see if that helps !

I generally use the wireless mouse. Occasionally I remove the mouse and use the touchpad (touchpad doesn't work when mouse is connected). All the drivers are up to date.

From your example, it looks as if one of the HD Compliant devices should be removed. I'm assuming if I remove the wrong one, Windows will automatically restore it,

If the laptop comes with any sort of OEM driver or software that controls the touch pad or if you have anything running in the windows tray that is for the touch pad try remove that or disable it at least reason being these are often not that good to begin with and windows does a better job at managing these devices.

I see you mentioned it happens on either device but these are two areas that come to mind.

- Mouse acceleration and mouse DPI(polling rate) are two areas where sporadic mouse behavior can happen.
- Having two or more hid devices that control the mouse at any given time are grounds for inconstancy.

Try to hone in on the issue by process of elimination so disable the touch pad all together and focus on the issue with the one device.

What is the external mouse does it have a software suite?

Can you elaborate on the resident cursor thing? i am not following there did you set something? or the cursor just displays a random cursor sometimes?

Check both devices for errors click 'view all events'

@Malneb: The external mouse is a wireless Logitech M185. When I plugged it in, Windows found it and used its own driver. I changed the settings so the touchpad is disabled if the mouth is plugged in. After looking at your last post, I went to the device manager, and decided to open the even viewer. Turns out there are many errors in it. The image shows just a few and I THINK the times coincide with when the extra cursor appears. I'm going to pay more attention to times now that I've noticed this.

WRT to resident cursor, if you look at my post from a couple of days ago (July 4th), I posted an image of the screen with the little round spot containing a cursor, and the cursor that actually works...sort of. If I move the cursor, it flickers and moves and it's very hard to be precise if I want to move it to a certain place. While I type, both cursors also flicker, but I just move the real one off the screen so I can continue. When I then have to save something, a document perhaps, or copy and paste; or click on a button, the flickering gets so bad that it's hard to even close a document.

Still not entirely sure what you mean.

After further explanation from you the issue has to be due to having multiple cursors its the most logical answer. its not normal practice to have multiple cursor and the only way i know of to do this is by coding this functionality using win32 or winRT or using an existing application that duplexes multiple cursor by faking a hid device.

Can you elborate more on what you mean by WRT cursor? You installed something or this appeared?

From your Event Viewer snapshot, the Intel graphics driver is probably crashing. Maybe your real problem is the driver is stuttering and half-drawing screen updates. Try re-installing the graphics driver, and if that doesn't work -- it could be HW.

One of the clues is you said it takes a reboot or power cycle to clear the condition.

I went into the Device Manager and found two Intel Graphics (Intel Iris XE and Intel Iris XE MAX. Nothing in either events viewer and both are up to date. However, I was going to uninstall and reinstall anyway, but (sorry if this sounds naive), if I uninstall the devices, one at a time, how will that affect the display? Will Windows automatically reinstall the drivers?

If Event Viewer was clean (since I can only judge from the screen shot) then it might not be the graphics.

When you uninstall a graphics driver, then Windows defaults to "dumb" SVGA graphics mode until you install a better driver to increase the supported resolution. I would first check the Intel driver page for Iris XE and grab one of them:

I've been in a "wait-and-see" mode for a few days because the problem suddenly diminished drastically--not gone altogether, but far less. Today, after several prods by Windows 10 to install the latest update, I did so, and immediately the problem was back, with a vengeance. It took two reboots to get to a place where I could uninstall the Windows 10 update (I left the security update that was installed at the same time), and now (knock on wood), the problem seems to be at bay once again. I also noticed an optional update for an Intel display driver, so I'm downloading that. Odd that when I looked for driver updates, nothing was noted.

Fingers crossed again.
