    disk cleanup not working

    Hi all,
I use disk cleanup occasionally and have noticed the last couple of times, it does not clean everything up. Today it apparently cleaned windows update files and a couple of other lines and although it shows the recycle bin has been emptied there is 3Gb in there still to be cleaned. Also temp files and thumbnails have not been deleted.
If I move the cursor on the screen at any time it also closes down. I've run it several times with same result........
Have deleted temp files manually and run sfc, same same

In Powershell [admin],type in ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ---and when it has finished, run ---sfc /scannow --- which should ensure the system files are functioning normally.
Go through Disk Cleanup options and make sure those you require are checked.
The safer method of emptying the Recycle Bin is to go to it and confirm you want to delete everything before so doing.

    Hi and thanks,
    Powershell [admin],type in ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    Ran that, nothing found
    sfc /scannow
Ran that, found and repaired some files
Go through Disk Cleanup options and make sure those you require are checked.
Did that, same result. Recycle bin shows whatever mb on first run, then shows 0mb on subsequent run but files are still there.
Other lines ie thumbnails, temp files sometimes do not clear. Disk cleanup just hangs and if I click the mouse or move the cursor it closes down

Do you run the second "stage" option of Clean up system files ?

However, I have to say I've found the disk clean up options less than effective on most occasions. Following the degradation of Ccleaner since it was taken over by Avast, I now use Wise Disk Cleaner (basic install defaults are good enough) to compliment the Windows disk clean up.

    Try this command as admin

    rmdir /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin

    - If you have multiple drives, run the command for each drive but replace C:\ with the drive letter.

    - Sign out of windows then back in

Tried it but cannot find the file specified. No biggy, think I'll forget using disk cleanup and stick with Glary or Ccleaner. Maybe have a shot at wise disk cleaner portable as well

Don't add more of these programs into the mix it will just over complicate your issue. You need to find out what is wrong with the Recycle Bin or else you will just keep having issues.

So far you have done a SFC scan with no luck now its telling you that it cannot find the recycle bin with the previous command but you know that there is files in the Recycle bin that are 0 bytes. You also state that you did multiple scans where it was showing data in the bin and also no data in subsequent scans.

All this points towards at least file corruption but possibly overall hard drive corruption and you will need to run chk disk.

One other thing to ask is do any of these apps you use take control of the Recycle bin?

I would try this first boot into safe mode and try the command again rmdir /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin
Make sure any of these cleaners you use are turned off.

To enter safemode command, and then reboot the computer
    bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal

When you are done in SM type this command and then reboot the computer
    bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot

Failing all that start looking at chk disk there is some guides on this forum to do it.

Thanks Malneb. I found Ccleaner was linking to the recycle bin so deleted it and have not had the problem since.

Storage space will always clean something which disk cleanup doesn't but a huge chunk it does not clean, you still need to run disk cleanup.

    it's easy to test.
