Thanks Denis......It's highly unlikely that I will ever use the machine without the power chord being plugged in.......going to try and charge it, as Paul said, for about 12 hours, and if no joy then will remove battery, so as not to cause any further problems as Megahertz suggested....I think it was expecting rather too much from a 14 year old long dead battery.......Another learning curve !!
Actually, I thought you had already given it a fair chance before you first posted but do more if you want.
Personally, I'd expect a long-neglected battery to be a problem battery so I would only let it charge if I was in the room to keep an eye on it & to feel its temperature every now & again [it should never get too hot to touch].
So perhaps you can play some long-running music for 12 hours so its chords can entertain you.

The battery is dead, expired, caput, passed away, not in this world anymore.
It is probably 13 years old. It needs to be removed, it might leak, cause a fire or something.
The Battery Report is just fiction. My Toshiba Laptop battery report has locked at 70% capacity for years. In reality tests it must be around 10% or less.

The Battery report only reports recorded charge levels. It cannot detect defects.
