No particular risk, but I suppose any change in stress might shorten life in some manner..

When plugged in the PC is exposed to mains spikes, it any.

And it's different if you consider a laptop vs a desktop- but you give no specs.

Brazil is number one on lighting storms, and I've seen many computers that were toasted due to a lightning very far away, even the computer being off. Remember that the MoBo remains energized even if the computer is off.
When I shutdown my computer I switch my surge arrest off so the computer is completely not energized.
Never had any issue doing it for decades.

Normally when you close a laptop lid it enters sleep or hibernation mode.
If on sleep mode, if it has no battery, when you remove the power supply it does a hard shutdown and the file system can be corrupted.
Make sure Fast Start is disabled and that laptop has been shutdown or hibernated + shutdown before removing the PS.

No, hibernation survives without any power. I've even resumed from hibernation after removing the hard drive, temporarily replaced it with another for some testing, then reinstalled the original drive.

When a computer shuts down into hibernate it saves its state, i.e., what you were doing, into the hidden file C:\hiberfil.sys. After that file is saved the computer totally powers off. When the computer is turned on again it reads the C:\hiberfil.sys and uses that to restore your computer to what your were doing before you shut down the computer.

Since the computer was totally powered down during hibernate it is safe to unplug it.

If you frequently unplug your computer from the power source while it is in hibernation mode, there is a risk that the computer's hard drive or other components may become damaged over time. When a computer is in hibernation mode, it saves the current state of the system to the hard drive and then turns off power to all non-essential components. This means that the hard drive is still spinning and reading/writing data, even though the computer is not in use. If the power is suddenly cut off while the hard drive is in use, there is a risk that the read/write head could crash and damage the platters, resulting in data loss or hardware failure.

In addition, frequent power interruptions could also cause other components in the computer to fail prematurely, such as the power supply, battery, or motherboard. It's generally recommended to avoid frequent power interruptions and to properly shut down the computer before disconnecting it from the power source to avoid any potential damage or data loss.

Thanks for that advice about hard drives dating back to the last millenium. The world has moved on LOL.

However, electronics do not like frequent power spikes.

The question is ridiculous anyway. Who would frequently plug and unplug a device in hibernation anyway.

You'd be surprised how many prebuilds still opt to put in HDD's instead of SSD's, even nowadays. And data corruption as mentioned above can happen to a SSD as well, although this is less likely to happen with SSDs compared to traditional spinning hard drives.
