    Strange Non-responsiveness Issue

    HP Laptop Model 14-bw027AU
    Windows 10 Home 64 bit
    Version 22H2 Build 19045.2728

Most of the time, this laptop functions reasonably quickly as long as I am actively using it, but if I leave it unattended for more than, say, half an hour, it suddenly becomes slow to respond to a keyboard input or a mouse click, or rather the "blue circle of impatience" appears. It will remain on the blue circle for some time, but once it does respond, it is back to operating normally. It seems that the longer I leave it unattended, the longer the delays are... for example, an hour results in about 30 seconds to a minute of the blue circle after clicking the Start menu, or opening "This PC" by clicking on the desktop shortcut. Yesterday morning, after leaving it running overnight, it took six and a half minutes of the blue circle to just open "This PC". Once it opens however, I was able to use the laptop with no problems, closing and opening "This PC" and drives within it and running programs with no problems. Last night, I decided to leave the laptop running all night with "This PC" already open - and this morning when I went to use it, it took almost seven minutes to open C drive.

This behavior doesn't seem to be affected whether or not there are programs running already running, for example if I have Open Office or Photoshop running and leave it unattended, there is still a delay if I try to click on the Photoshop or Open Office window. but once it does respond, it all works fine.

It seems to me that there is some background service or application running that has to be terminated before it allows me access to the computer, but I have no idea what that might be. I am going to download and run SysInternals' "Process Monitor" and leave it running with its window open to see if I can spot what might be running, but I am keen to know if anyone here has experienced this sort of problem and was able to resolve it

You might try opening Task Manager before you leave the computer. Make sure to click on the CPU colums so that results are shown in the order of what is using the CPU most. When you return, hopefully Task Manager will still be showing you activity on the computer so that you might be able to spot what is misbehaving.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of doing that. I will try it, thank you

OK, I did this, but did not expect the result I got.

I left the laptop on and running overnight with the Task manager running, and in the morning - no delays or lockups. The laptop performed normally!

I did notice that something called "Antimalware Service Executable" seems to spend a lot of time at or near the top of the highest CPU usage.
