    Closure Report:

The OP reports that his data HDD on a dock has become RAW and inaccessible. Runs Partition check with AOMEI Partition Assistant and it reads the file system as NTFS, runs checkdisk.Result "CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.Windows has made corrections to the file system. No further action is required."Though the HDD was shown as NTFS, it is still inaccessible. OP runs CHKDSK with F + R switch which didn't change anything.

Disk Management showed that there is 300GB of data present. TestDisk was run in an effort to recover the data. TestDisk found the partition (TestDisk runs on Linux) and listed only six folders/files in the root level Directory ( leaving aside $Recycle.Bin and System Volume Information). ( This root level directory was created on 07 Mar 23 17:28 ) OP's screenshot in his post #17 refers

    What is more important is these two folders/files 6-Mar-2023 16:30 found.000 and 6-Mar-2023 16:33 bootTel.dat

IMO, It indicates that a boot level autochk.exe ( which is a form of Check disk) was run by the system on the HDD and it has made a clean sweep and created the found.000 folder. (File index corrupted in MFT. Checkdisk deletes all the orphaned files - but don't ask me why it got corrupted - I do not know ). An expert ( not me ) opines that the bootTel.dat "file is telemetry information written by autochk.exe and read by Windows later to tell Microsoft about filesystem issues, so that they may improve Windows in the future."

So even before the OP ran the AOMEI PA partition check, the system had done its autocheck, correcting the file system issue and returned the HDD to NTFS status. AOMEI PA partition check further made some corrections and created the 07-Mar-2023 17:28 found.001 folder. And these two found.000 and found.001 folders together may contain OP's 300GB data. and that is what Windows Disk Management shows. I had assumed that all data is present and hopeful. Hopes belied .

@mecmec, this is the current status as I see it.

Can the files in the found folders be recovered? Its going to be a stupendous but uncertain task. If the large files are contagious and not fragmented yes perhaps. In any case, if you want to try, Run TestDisk, copy those two found folders to another drive. And then

My eyes are doing well. I have no problem viewing the monitor and typing posts. Right now I can't read the small letters. Around 20th March when I report to the eye hospital for followup, glasses for near vision will be prescribed. But as per the schedule given by the Superspeciality Eye Hospital the eyedrops ( 3 different ones) will continue till I depart to USA on 12th April 2023. And that should restore complete normalcy. I will be landing at Atlanta , Georgia on 13th April 23 16:25 hours. A long pending US visit after 7 years.

Take care of yourself in first place.
I think you shouldn't be using a computer. The new lens takes some time to be fixed in place.

    No worries there.

Initially I thought I shall keep away from my PC for 20 days. But then

    Hi @jumanji,

I am really grateful that you took the time to help out despite your condition (resent eye surgery). Thank you so much.
In due time I will take a look at the proposed method/program. Heal well, and enjoy your trip to US, when the time comes.

    Hi @jumanji;

I have bought a brand new HDD (Toshiba P300, 1 TB), and I am about to copy the found.000 and found.001 folders from the faulty disk. However, I am not sure which directory to select as target (dir with 1 dot or 2 dots)?

    Hi @Paul Black,

Are you able to answer my question? Does it matter which directory you highlight (1 dot or 2 dots), see screen shot below?

    hi @mecmec,

In screen 5, you will highlight/select [List] and press Enter The sixth screen will list the folders/files in the 1TB disk. ( The directory with the single dot is automatically highlighted/selected)

That is your first screenshot in your post#17.

On your new 1TB disk create a folder named Recovery. Please note the the disk's drive letter.. The folder named Recovery in that disk/drive will be the destination where you will copy the found.000 and found.001 folders.

Before starting TestDisk, apart from your faulty 1TB disk , you must plugin the the new 1TB disk also wherein you had created the folder named Recovery. Test Disk should see that disk also.

Copying files listed by TestDisk: Follow the process from screenshot 5 in this post.

    Hi @jumanji,

If I want to copy all files in the found.000 directory, will I simply hit (capital) 'C' in this page? I have selected M:\Recovery as destination.

If you had just selected the found.000 folder and then press C, reach the destination and press C again the entire folder with all files inside, would be copied to the destination. You will have found.000 folder in the destination which you can open and see all the files.

Note: When you select the folder in TestDisk, do not press Enter. If you press Enter it will open the folder and show all the files in it. You will then have to select the files to copy. . The individual files will be copied. It will be useful only if you want to copy only some selected files to the destination.

Got it! It may take a while before I can proceed, because the new HDD must be used for another urgent task. Thank you again for your great help.

Fine. From here onwards you will be on your own. Just google "What is found.000 folder/directory? " "Is it possible to recover data from the found.000 folder?" and the like and do your own research. The link How to Recover Data from Found.000 Folder was one result I got from such a search. Personally I had never worked on it since I am not a Data Recovery professional, not an IT professional and have only limited number of arrows in my quiver acquired with my own research and experimentation and grabbing user experiences . ( I am only an Electronics engineer by qualification, Biomedical Engineer by work assignment and a retired Scientist in govt. service by designation. )
