    Event ID 161 Volmgr issue

    Good day

    Win10 version - 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2604)

I'm having an intermittent issue with Event ID 161, looking at the event viewer it has happened on specific dates:

So its happened twice this month. There is no bsod and there is also no memory.dmp file.

In between those latest 2 errors ive browsed/played games with no problem. I will also add the last 2 occurences happened while just browsing the internet. The sound cut out and i just got a system restart.

Any idea what it could be? Ive done the usual SFC scans but was wondering if i could do anything extra.

    Thank you

Event 161 volmgr - means volume manager driver file - NOT connected VOLUME on the computer sound.

Due to the length of time between the errors it is likely to be some software application rather than a hardware issue of ram, a drive fault or a PSU fault

The other possible cause is a power issue to the computer itself rather than a stable supply to the computer - with a problem of the PSU itself.

DO YOU KNOW the power supply to the property is defintely stable
Is the computer power lead connected to some manner of power strip or UPS

If so try connecting direct to AC outlet

I notice that you did not get a follow up reply to your earlier thread on this issue

Please be assured that I willl not leave you until either we solve it or I surrender as being unable to

    Hi there

    Thank you for the reply.

Im not connected to any UPS device and and i am plugged into an AC outlet.

So i will add that i live in South Africa and due to the economic situation here we have rolling blackouts everyday.

If there are other diagnostics i can try out i will. I don't really want to do any stress testing as i believe it isn't hardware related either.

Due to the intervals between each error i am not overly bothered, however it would be nice to know what exactly it is.

    Thank you.

I think you will find that the 161 event is followed by this

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
    Source: Kernel-Power
    Event ID: 41
    Level: Critical"

Can you check event viewer to confirm that is the case. I am sure it will be, especially in respect of
I will also add the last 2 occurences happened while just browsing the internet. The sound cut out and i just got a system restart.
If you wish me to try and see if I can find the cause please send me the file as here
    BSOD - Posting Instructions

    THE V2 log and please
Upload the zip file directly into your post.

We will use that to check aspects of the system
I realise there are no dump files but the log provides many aspects of the system including event history

The logs indicate a hardware problem but I cannot identify at this time what is responsible
Please start with a memtest check
    The FREE version
MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 and ARM Memory Testing Tool

you have two 8GB sticks of Kingston
Run memtest with them in as now and IF it finds a fault
Take one stick out and run it again
If that does not find a fault
    run on the other stick

To use memtest - use a USB flash drive - Memtest will automatically make it bootable
    Please follow this guide
PassMark MemTest86 - Memory Diagnostic Tool - Technical Information

see creating boot disk in windows please

Run the standard test NO cmds are necessary the test wil run when you boot from the usb
There is no need to enter firmware setup - use the one time boot menu

Please see screenhots here and run TWO complete passes each pass consists of 11-13 tests.
    MemTest86 - Screenshots

On the third screenshot down you can see that the testing is on 41% of a pass and 12% of test five.

YOU run it please until it has completed 100% of the pass and you THEN LEAVE it running until you reach that again.
If it has not found errors on TWO complete passes you may presume the ram is OK

Previously it was often suggested to leave it running overnight but as mentioned on the site
Generally a single pass is sufficient to catch all but the most obscure errors.

I doubt you will need it but here is the full user guide

Finally I do not need the results just whether it has found any faults.
IF however you wanted to post the results
    MemTest86 - Test Results

press Y to save it will save to the usb

    hi there

ive used Memtest previously - the default test uses 4 passes. Must i change this to 2?

If there are errors and when testing individual sticks do i run 2 passes on each?

I will run this in the morning - it is slightly disheartening to hear that it is a potential hardware issue but i will do the test in the meantime and await anything further from your end.

Sorry did not realise default was four - just leave it and start testing
as you have only two sticks ff it does find errors just run it again on the one on defaults - to try and id which stick
It is as you know, not going to take that long.

If you have run it recently since the problems started then it may well be I am on the wrong line.

ok so i had enough time this evening just to do a 2 pass test - no errors found.

when i get up in the morning ill probably just run the standard 4 pass just to make sure.

Let me know if you perhaps come up with any other issues that you find.

Just as an addition i did the 4-pass test this morning and there were no errors.

So I was wrong regarding the ram but it was worth a check
    You have installed
MSI Afterburner 4.6.5 Beta 2 4.6.5 Beta 2 MSI Co., LTD

I suggest you uninstall afterburner especially a BETA version
As you may know beta versions are issued to engage testing of the version before the known stable version is released and should not be used on your everyday computer.

As well as that there are suggestions that MSI afterburner does not work so well with the 3060
I do appreciate that MSI say it wil work with any graphics not just MSI cards.

    You also have installed
RivaTuner Statistics Server 7.3.4 Beta 3

the same applies - basically BETA version

I cannot say these are the causes of the errors but it will certainly be better to get rid of them

I am offline now until approx 2000hrs Uk time
