    plenty of system resources yet super slow performance


    Hi there!

    I have a 6 years old Dell Optiplex desktop computer. It is SUPER slow! When I right-click on anything, it takes 5-6 seconds to open. When I click on a folder, any folder, it takes 6-7 seconds to respond.

    When I check the Task Manager usages are as below:

    • CPU : 10%
    • Memory: 57%
    • Disk: 50%
    • Network; 0%



    Here some details about the system:

    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590S CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz
    • 8 GB
    • Windows 10 Version 20H2
    • Not a SSD


    No viruses or malware detected. I am assuming it's either the HDD or RAM are the culprit. Any ideas?

    Hi, kindly post a screenshot of your task manager illustrating the process(es) responsible for high disk usage, thus:

    History: (so often not given by posters)
    - how long has this been the case?
    - what changed about the time this started?

    How much free space do you have on C: ?
    Are your page file settings as default?

    What checks have you done?

    Start by checking your disk(s).
    Hard Disk Sentinel (full functional trial) - result right on the GUI instantly, informative comment.

    If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.
    Result on GUI.

    Report if passes or fails.

    When I right-click on anything, it takes 5-6 seconds to open.
    Once again, this is usually the effect of a poor shell extension, if there's no other underlying issue.

    To identify that, once you have your resource usage under control - that's your priority
    - start with Shellexview (free)
    - disable all non-MS shell extensions
    - check if rt click faster

    Then work backwards to identify any problem ones.

    Install any free 3rd party AV for starters and compare. Like Adaware or Panda. Windows Defender is a menace.

    You can capture a trace with Windows Performance Recorder, using the following parameters.
    Click the start button then reproduce the issue (Ex: Right click on one or two folders).

    Lets do the basic.
    Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
    It will say your disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart
    Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters, bad sectors etc

    Back to Windows, open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    sfc /scannow

    If it finds any corrupted files, fixing or not, reboot and run again

    Then run
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    and
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
