Windows starting to freeze on boot up

It's when i get to the message about the BIOS; it just stalls and i have to hold in the start button and reboot. It happened for the first time about a week ago and again today. I've made no changes to the BIOS - not for years anyway. The PC is about 6 years old, so could it be hardware? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

As a starting point if it's 6 years old the BIOS battery may be flat make a note of settings in bios first then replace battery and redo settings

Thanks, that sounds like a good plan. I'll let you know how it goes.

Edit: changed the battery today; so far so good

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Tonight when booting up it first stalled at the usual point - where it shows the date of the BIOS. At the third attempt it got past that point, but then stalled at the blue screen with the windows logo. Eventually at the fifth attempt it finally booted. Any further suggestions? Thanks.

    Hello @autolycus10,

For diagnostic purposes that may help, run the following.

Copy & Paste each of the following commands into a CMD Prompt and press Enter . . .

    Code:

    sfc /scannow
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow

    For information: . . .

    > How to Repair System Files with SFC Command in Windows 10
    > How to Repair Windows 10 Image using DISM

    I hope this helps.

Thanks. On the first sfc /scannow run i got Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
Then I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and got The restore operation completed successfully.
The i ran sfc /scannow again and got Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Would this suggest that the problem was found and fixed or do i need to follow the other links, which look very involved to a semi IT literate like me?

If the problem has been fixed, then you should NOT get the same problem.

The links I posted for you were merely for informational purposes only.

    I hope this helps.

    Is any hardware overclocked?

My wife's computer was with a similar issue. I disconnected the power cord from the PS, opened the case, removed the memories and graphics card and cleaned the slot and contacts with a contact cleaner. Problem fixed.
