I am keen not to tell you how to suck eggs but I have prepared a Custom view for that event 1074 if it all gets too much for you. You can import it into your Event viewer.
Event viewer, Custom view definition - Shutdowns.zip
Then all you need to do is select it, look on the right-hand, click on Attach task to this Custom view.

I wrote a guide to importing Custom views in
Import Event viewer, Custom views - Start-Shutdown, Power state transitions - my post #2 - TenForums

Thank you for your continued support Denis. I will look through the procedure and have another go with Task viewer as soon as I can.

    Kind regards

The other problem is figuring out the event that starts when the shutdown button is pressed.

According to the link Dalchina kindly sent it is:

windows 7 - Using Task Scheduler to Run a Task Before Shutdown - Super User

    Log : System
    Source : User32
    EventID : 1074

I really don't know if event ID 1074 still applies to Win 10 Home
I know of no 'Shutdown' button but when Start > Power > Shutdown is launched (shutdown.exe) then I believe it responds to its switches unless postponed by a 'Shutdown script' delay.

    Hope this helps...

It occurred to me that, if it is difficult to interrupt the shutdown process for a useful period (to see the warning message), then perhaps one could disable the shut-down option in the start menu. I quickly found this:
How to remove shutdown option in start menu of Windows 10 - Super User
and the first answer suggests changing this key in the registry:
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Start\HideShutDown
So I tried it on my W10-Pro machine and it works. So next I started up a W10-Home laptop, and found it works there also. Having done this, then a batch file or whatever (vbs script) can be created to display a warning, then execute the shutdown using the command line 'shutdown.exe' with whichever switches apply.

Of course, this won't stop users pressing the power button, or other methods (eg pulling the power lead), but you can only go so far to help...

Thank you all for your replies and continued support. It has been a learning experience for me. After carefully reading through all the replies and checking the links my final conclusion is that this is beyond my ability to perform due to a lack of expertise and available time.

If someone else on the www has actually succeeded in finding a method using Task Scheduler on Win 10 Home it would be easy to follow those instructions. I haven't completely given up on the idea, but for now, I will put this on hold for the reasons mentioned above.

This is a wonderful forum and I thank you all again for your help and support.

    Kind regards

    Chris,

It's up to you but if you say which bit you can do and which bit stops you then I can help you through it.
1 Set up an Event viewer, Custom view for EventID 1074 - either doing it yourself or by importing the Custom view definition I posted at #21.
2 Assign a task to that Custom view - described in my post #20
3 Define the task - also described in my post #20
4 Write the script that the task refers to - also described in my post #20
5 Test the task to make sure that the Event viewer & TS definitions are correct
6 Test the task by shutting down.

    All the best,
    Denis

Thank you very much for your reply Denis and for all your help. I entered event Event ID 1074 into task scheduler and that's about it.

I am totally lost with points 1-4. I suspect they will take many hours of study, trial and error to figure out. So that's why I have decided, for now, to put the matter on hold. Maybe when I have more time in the future I will be able to tackle the problem again. If someone on the www has already done it with TS then It would be relatively easy to copy their procedure. Or, maybe there is an app somewhere out there that can post a message on shutdown.

I really appreciate all the help I have received.

    Kind regards
    Chris

    Chris,

You mean you created / imported the Custom view into Event viewer?
Sorry to be pedantic but it's necessary when I can't see over your shoulder.

Thank you for your reply Denis. I am afraid i have not got that far yet. I have only entered the event trigger as shown in the screenshot below. This trigger doesn't seem to do anything at shutdown.

    Kind regards

As you are still having trouble, have you tried the reg setting to hide the 'shutdown' button?
