    - but would it do be expected to do anything to improve performance? especially when we don't have any evidence as to where any bottlenecks are, from disk performance to resource use...

Yep - the two most useful upgrades to improve performance are to upgrade to at least 8 GB RAM and install SSD instead of HDD. After that, software changes are only beneficial to extent of stopping unnecessary background apps running.

Stopping services has very little impact.

In the end, a low end or old device is ultimately limited by the CPU and associated mobo design.

You cannot expect 2022 performance out of a 10 year old device.

Even the fastest 2012 device will be slow compared with a modest 2022 device.

Well this is the sad thing I also try to accept, because there are no new laptop that come with 7 row keyboard and that's good like X220,most of them are chick let keyboard, and it sucks for me. I do use chick let keyboard on ASUS A43SV, but I kept using external keyboard in the end. It's a hassle to bring external keyboard when you are really mobile between office, and only X220 fits my need. I seens xyte.ch or 51nb mods, but most of them are, well, overpriced and over my budget, I hope I can bought one, but I think based on the pricing, it's way beyond my budget.

Seems the only way to having a work around is to buy a new laptop that's good and fits my need. :/

    My Speccy system report:

What about using the startup configuration to eliminate some services on startup (e.g. Docker, MariaDb, or other things a user might not need to have running at all times...)

I suspect there's an article about it here, but I can't seem to think of the correct keywords to find it. In any case, if I were to want to shutdown (or disable, or set to manual) any or all services, are there any which you recommend I DEFINITELY keep to avoid coming up with a system that won't boot?

    Thank you!
(now to find that screen with those settings... )
