The person "questions_" here: Does in-place upgrade need external media? Does it delete any - Microsoft Community page 2 suggestions that in-place upgrade may not solve the search error. Also, a tech did something like that when repairing my profile on another system before, and I then started having other problems. i noticed this as well:
Windows 10 In place upgrade failed - Microsoft Community I am considering to do it though. I've been troubleshooting other peripherals prior to doing it since i don't know if some things i purchased are working already.

Hi, is there a question there?

Sadly my crystal ball is down for maintenance for the unforeseeable future, so can't tell you whether this will magically solve your problem for sure. Seems no one else has suggested any other approach...if you've noticed..

i am just replying about that people said that in-place upgrade does not always solve the problem. you were asking me about it. i can try it. it is true that most people only offer to do a clean installation or repair installation. I do not recall in old versions of windows how damaged files or something that was not working was repaired if it was not infected. I think that I used a disc, but I do not know if there was ever issues related to windows updates causing malfunctions. There was blue screen errors, and I had to use the disc sometimes for some reasons. it was too many years ago.

Best have a go then.. If you create a disk image beforehand you should be very safe.

i think i asked initially, but i am not sure i understood correctly. i think you or someone else said disc images are partitions or something. that program that is commonly used in the free version only creates a partial disc image. it seems it might only make a partial backup. So then, i would create a disc image with that program, but also backup everything that i need to backup on the external hard drive as well. Is that correct? One of my external hard drives has disc images on it and backups, but they may be from different dates.

Disk imaging- I said a disk image - by any imaging program- produces a file containing a compressed copy of the used part of each partition imaged.

    Nothing about a partial backup.

You can use Macrium Reflect -free- (e.g) to create a disk image of all the partitions comprising your O/S. Normally if you select
search/explorer crashing. event log shows dll errors. disc imaging?-untitled.png
It checks the correct boxes for you.

Plenty of Youtube videos around- just search for them.
Expect the file created to be around 50% of the used space imaged - size varies depending on data and file type of course.

As the image includes ALL the data on ALL the partitions selected- why would you need a further backup?
You can even mount image files and extract individual files and folders using file explorer if you wish.

Please feel free to read up about imaging.

i might do this tomorrow. i hadn't done it yet since it stopped happening. I found something that I don't know if it caused it, but various things occurred lately:
    - i noticed that I tested this repair of it in the alternate profile, and it said the error existed, but i wasn't having search/explorer crashes.
    - i updated windows again
-installed an old mysql software that was part of a bundle. windows 10 said it was not compatible. Perhaps I can try to remove that since i don't need accounting software. i was trying to figure out the latest version of that.
    -various errors suddenly occurred today:
-search and explorer crash. .net runtime error, kernel error.
something showed a hard drive paging error, but 20 minutes later i had some error on my system about an external drive not being detected. There are not any errors with any of those drives with checkdisk. the virtual memory that is allocated is greater than what is recommended.

i have one concern about reinstallations and repairs of it: that is that these updates that conflict with the system, or possibly they have bugs in them: they might reinstall the errors.
