2.5" SATA HDD and SSD drives are interchangeable.

Post a link to your current HDD model specs.

There's really not to confirm if it's a 2.5" SATA HDD. I personally recommend Samsung SSDs.

Post the link to your laptop specs too.

It's an older-ish laptop and I'm not sure the specs are available on the HP website anymore. The System Board is 81FC 80.21

There's nothing to think about here then - 2.5" SATA HDD can be replaced by a 2.5" SATA SSD.

I've done this before numerous times, so posting from experience.

    What size would you suggest?

What size do you have now and how much is empty? I personally wouldn't buy anything smaller than 500 GB minimum. Depending on the price difference, go bigger if possible.

I'm pretty sure I have a 1tb and I have 858gb free (but I just reinstalled the os so nothing else installed right now to really judge that)

If 1 TB served you well before, that's a good choice to keep you set for a while.

If you decide to upgrade to a SSD, buy a USB enclosure to put your HDD into so you can use to for additional storage like making backups:
Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Have you ever had to reinstall Windows because something went wrong? With a backup image, you can be up and running in minutes.
