    Is there a difference beween disk cleanup vs storage sense cleanup?

    There are 2 methods to "cleanup" system partition:

    1. Start -> Administrative tools -> disk cleanup -> C:\
    2. Settings -> System -> Storage sense -> configure storage sense or run it now -> clean now

    I want to know, is there a difference as to what is being cleaned by one that is not cleaned by the other?
    Does it make sense to run both methods of cleanup or not? and if so why?

    I think that the cleanup tool will give you more options, whereas Storage sense is meant to perform a lot of tasks automatically, especially is space becomes low.

    I once cleaned up everything in disk cleanup tool, and then went to storage sense to see if it would clean anything on top of that, and it did some 2 MB of data or so, I wonder what that was.

    I never tested other way arround.
    If only I could find some docs on both.

    As far as I can tell they both do the same job and clean up the same files.

    Would you be so kind and share where did you get these descriptions from?

    The text descriptions are provided by Microsoft. If you run Disk Clean up, then select any item in it's list the Description box below tells you what each item is. If you go to System > Storage then click on Temporary files you'll see the same descriptions are also shown there. My screenshot shows both, side by side.

    I mean screenshot which you took (the one behind disk cleanup tool), where did you get it?, I can't find it in settings app or anywhere else

    EDIT:
    Ah OK I see! thanks! temporary files...

    EDIT2:
    @Bree
    Those items which are not checked under temporary files... does that mean storage sense will not get rid of them?
    either manual clean up or scheduled.

    To be honest, I've never used Storage Sense to clean up anything. Call me old fashioned, but I still prefer using Disk Clean up (which is still there, even in Windows 11)

    But I would assume that yes, Storage Sense should only clean up those items that your have configured with a tick.

    awesome, thanks for insights!

    I'll test with recycle bin unchecked and see if that's how it works.

    was just digging into this myself and entertaining enabling it on a schedule. low disk space by any reasonable definition will never happen so I was trying to ascertain whether monthly/weekly etc was ideal. since disks are set to defrag weekly i figured id match it but wanted to be clear on what it purged first.

    was concerned about drivers in the driverstore, seems theyre left. was concerned about cookies (unless its due to my browser being open when i ran it, those are left as well). was certainly concerned about my downloads folder but pro-tip if you change the default location of the folder (mine is in my dropbox as its where i sort/run my portable softwares from) it doesnt even present it as an option any longer (via the manual cleaning path of storage > temporary files) unsure if it does when set to a timeframe under storage sense auto but not going to test that theory.

    all in all, it seems to be a 1:1 moving of the disk cleanup utility from control panel to settings with a renaming likely due to the fact that automated cleaning was added.

    one thing ive noticed which may be some weirdness on my end (cause of course) is I keep trying to check/use Windows Update Cleanup as theres ~400mb in there, but it simply doenst seem to touch it no matter how many times or ways i run it.
