Cannot figure our why new desktop is so slow?

    Thanks in advance for reading.

Recently bought a Dell 5060 Optiplex 15-8500 with 16gb ram and a 1TB SS drive.

Windows has been super slow and glitchy from the start.

Ive tried some of the basics: (checked all drivers, windows update, changed to high performance, cut off any apps that could be slowing things down, etc) but to no avail. Even my internet access is a bit slow and im getting 150mbps+ speeds from my modem.

I checked to see if I could upgrade to 11 but PC Check is telling me my processor is clocking in at 0.8 ghz, which is too slow for 11. I thought when I bought this that an 8th gen i5 would suffice for basic pc usage?

I realize this is a very broad issue/question but can someone help me here? Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Hi, sorry to hear it's a disappointment. First as you mention Win 11, don't expect that upgrading to that will necessarily bring any performance benefit.

Some idea of what you mean by 'slow' would help.

For example, how long does it take to boot to lock screen? You have a SSD, so 9-15s or so would be typical.

This PC seems to be from around 2018- so did you buy it second hand?
If so, are you still using the O/S as installed- and was that clean installed before you got it, or did you clean install it yourself?

    Thanks for your reply.

Time to boot was 31 seconds.

I did buy this second hand on Ebay. It was an "open box" item.

The seller claims to have clean installed prior to me buying but I cannot be sure.

Clean Install Windows 10 I would make a full backup with Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect and do a clean install.

This way you will be sure you have no bitcoin miner, etc in you "clean install".

    Hi,

Can you boot to your bios and verify if "Intel SpeedSteps" is enabled ?

If it's not, try to enable it. My LT defaults to 800 MHz when this is disabled.

If you are running on the balanced power plan, your CPU will fall back to 800 MHz, "IF there's nothing to do"... Upon any request it should start clocking up to 1600 then 2400 then 2700 in and maintain required clock speed until request completes.
