Win 10 PC HDD cranks constantly

    Hi Y'all,
When I turn on my PC (win 10, 21H1) the HDD cranks constantly for about 10 minutes and the PC is very sluggish. I checked, no updating going on. Is there an app to find out what keeps the HDD so busy?

Defrag is the first thing I would do and tell it to defrag anyway.

Task Manager - Processes and look at sort by the disk column

Open Task Manager in Windows 10

Check the drive health with HD Sentinel app.

Windows 10 performance is much better with a SSD boot drive. The computer will boot up much faster, programs load faster, and disk intensive activities like updates and viruses scans finish faster. I suggest you consider upgrading if boot drive is not a SSD.

Have you investigated by using the Task Manager?

After you select its "More Details" box (in the bottom left corner), the columns of Task Manager's "Processes" tab includes one for disk I/O. If you click on the Disk column's header, it'll sort the process names by their amount of disk activity.

OK, thanks guys. I will check that.
However, I have been thinking about switching to an SSD. The problem is that my CPU is not new enough to install Win 11. I might have to replace it also but I don't know if there is a better CPU for my PC. The current one is a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz. Any suggestions?

Windows 10 is supported through October 2025.

If you plan on keeping this PC, you will notice the improvement going to a SSD - even on your Core 2 - I have one I upgraded to SSD, so 1st hand experience.

Your PC CPU may not be upgradable and probably doesn't have TPM - the other Windows11 requirement.

    Hi,

Upgrading to a SSD will certainly help your speed issue, But there is no processor upgrade available to make your machine support Windows 11, without some kind of hack.

This is machine is a whooping 12 years old... If it is it's original Hard Disk... And you value your data on it... Stop everything get a SSD and clone / image / backup it asap.

Now I'm getting scared. What would be a decent free clone/image app?

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect is highly used and recommended by members here. Tutorials on YouTube to help and feel free to ask questions here.
