Is there a way of using a single SSD as a cache to speed up computer?

I have been reading about people using SSD to cache for a platter drive, and I am wondering, if you partition a larger SSD, can you do the same thing with only one drive? Would this in help increase RAM capacity without increasing the RAM? I am not sure if this would even be feasible.

    Hi,

You need a platter disk and a SSD.

You can enable ReadyBoost on SSD drives, Use the drive and set it to maximum size windows can use.

How to enable Readyboost in Windows 10

Then Reduce the swapfile on your C: to minimum and create another large swapfile on the SSD

Then you can move, Windows / Users temps directories and browsers cache to that drive too.

With 10k hard disk it gives a pretty good punch.

If your OS is already running from a SSD there is no gain in doing this.

How much memory you have? Is your Win 10 64 or 32 bits?

Generally saying, there in no miracle. If you're short in memory you can add more. If you already have a SSD, even a faster one won't make much difference.

It is already part of Windows and has been for decades.

Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings > Performance > Settings... > Advanced > Virtual memory > Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.

That paging file is on the SSD/HDD.

That is used if you have a lack of RAM or an application that needs it.

Though you should bear in mind that RAM is much faster than even an SSD.

It is rather pointless doing this if you only have one drive - just let Windows manage the pagefile size.

Readyboost is pretty useless for any PC with 4GB or more.

In the end, buying more RAM is a better investment than a 2nd SSD if your apps are constrained by lack of RAM. So how much RAM do you have?

It is for a set of old laptops that I want to run faster (they all have SSD's) - they all have 4GB of RAM and it is not cost effective to upgrade the RAM at this point, so I was hoping for another method.

Are you attempting to speed up the boot or speed up the computer after boot?

With 4G of memory, in my opinion, a 32 Bits Win10 OS runs better than 64Bits Win10 OS, specially on laptops that shares main memory for graphics.
