Malwarebytes finished at 20h 7m scanning 410k items. (Not sure why there are nearly double the amount of items scanned this time compared to last. I've not installed anything else.) As it was scanning, I had the task manager up. It consistently showed at or nearly 100% disk usage. The top main two were malwarebytes and system.

    - did you note the transfer rate?

I have no metrics to compare how long a malwarebytes scan on a 'typical' PC should take though.

If you are still limited by low transfer rate you would need to consider detailed technical analysis as I mentioned way back, and review previous threads on that topic for ideas.

Hmmm. Unfortunately I didn't check. I do know that the scan I did on my desktop took a fraction of the time. I'm re-running it on both to compare and to pick up the speeds.

    Searching tenforums for such cases:
    See

Impact of a particular update (historic)
Discovered a Way to a HUGE Increase in Disk Transfer Rate

    Particular MOBO cause:
Poor performance but very low hardware usage

    - as you'll begin to see there are various factors which can lead to suddenly reduced performance.

Take some time to find one that seems similar to yours, and keep an eye out for ideas..

Ultimately using the WPA as I suggested may point the way.

Retested the malwarebytes. No change a second time round. Around twenty hours on the laptop, five hours on the desktop (Incl. 128GB SSD) . At the slowest point it was barely 30kB/s transfer rate, but did raise to several MB/s during a fast period.

Also tried a basic transfer test of copying a 2GB file from mem stick to HDD. It transferred at around 28MB/s. This is a lot slower than CrystalDiskMark stated, but I'm not sure if the read from the stick slowed it down. The stick is in the USB3 port.

Will check out the links you provided.
