OK,
1:30 to show desktop - no icons on the taskbar.
2:50 to show task manager at all. (CPU showing around 30-40%; disk 100%)
6:30 Disk suddenly drops to below 10%
Noticed that Dropbox was taking significant disk usage. Trying without it running at start up.
1:20 to show desktop.
2:20 to show task manager.
5:20 disk usage drops.
Funny, Dbx still running in the background even though it's set to not start.
Don't have fast startup on.
Quite long... depends on startups too of course.
a. How long from power on to lock screen?
b. If you perform a clean boot, how long from login to low resource usage?
Don't forget you have items from post #6 that might help.
See previous threads on low disk transfer rate and 100% disk use where slow performance is reported.I can only give you pointers- at some point if your disk performance is well below par this can become near impossible.
All times were taken from a complete shutdown boot.
This time, was even worse:
1:40 to lock screen (I have it currently set to run straight through to the desktop.)
2:20 to bare desktop.
However, just 5:00 to low disk usage.

Clean boot = zero extra startups (Google or see tutorial if unsure).
There should be two stages -
a. Boot to lock screen
b. Login to desktop
- unless you have configured yours to skip login and automatically log in to a fixed account...?
If you haven't already looked at it, the processes shown in TaskManager's Process tab's display can be sorted by their disk usage. Since the post-login disk activity continues to be high for a significant amount of time, the Process display might help in finding some of the programs responsible. Unfortunately, it won't highlight those processes which have already finished beating on the disk pre-login.
That's where the WPA analysis is relevant (see above)- to hopefully help to identify cause.
Significant is the fact the PC was ok with an earlier build of Windows. Resolving this so disk performance is improved is, I suggest, a matter of technical analysis, and I don't think it will prove to be a process-related issue (excessive CPU usage), nor will a solution be easy.
Still await the times for a clean boot I believe- but I don't actually expect better performance.

Sorry about the delay. Had other things to do.
Tried looking for Lenovo updates for this model and there doesn't seem to be any. This would suggest that all Lenovo drivers are up to date.
Tried the clean boot as described in the thread Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts
The timings are:
1:20 to lock screen
1:55 to desktop
2:30 to Task manager
3:20 to full drop in disk usage.

Those don't loook unusual for a HDD- in fact time to lock screen is quite short.
After a clean boot, do you notice any performance issues in practice?

Something like disk imaging is demanding.. strongly recommended routinely (e.g. Marium Reflect).
Of course you need a meaningful point of reference, and the speed of transfer varies hugely between USB2 and USB3 of course, assuming imaging to an external disk.
But if the transfer rate ( shown on-screen whilst the image is being created) is very low, that would be indicative.
If the disk transfer rate is still restricted, it comes down to analysis, and referring to other threads on low transfer rate or 100% disk usage for ideas.
Quote
