    question on standby memory

    Hi experts,

I am experiencing split second lags and i am trying to find a solution. I have come across something called as standby memory.

Below is what i see for my desktop.
    question on standby memory-screenshot-2021-11-19-235559.png

Can you please help me understand if this is good or bad?

    Thanks,

    Edit: adding more information.

    My PC specs:
    Ryzen 5600x
    GPU: GTX 1050
    16 GB RAM
    500GB NVMe SSD

Issue: in performance tab of task manager all the graphs look fine to me and there are no spikes there. but in general usage and in gaming the experience is not smooth. there are split second lags or i can say that it stutters for a millisecond. the lag is not constant but it appears randomly and is quite frequent. It doesnt affect my usage but i am noticing it often and it is making the experience bad.
    It wasnt like this before.

After i started seeing it I have installed amd automatic driver to let it do its own thing and install the chipset and other drivers. I have updated my NVIDIA GPU drivers.

What has changed in last two weeks:
    1. I had ryzen built in CPU cooler for my 5600x, it was giving temperatures of 85-90c and now i have installed Cooler Master HYPER 212 turbo CPU cooler, we had a lot of trouble while installing this cooler as it was not fitting on the motherboard properly but now we have fixed it tightly. Now the temperature goes to 74c Max.
    2. Possible windows 10 updates.
    3. before installing the CPU cooler for 5-6 days i was underclocking the CPU to control the temperatures and it was working fine. The underclocking was done using AMD Ryzen Master tool after starting windows 10. I have uninstalled it now since the cooler is doing a good job.

    It is all in order
Standby memory is ram held in reserve by Windows - for use by the system if needed. - hardware etc.
If processes require more ram than is shown as free, then the standby memory is released by the systme as necessary

Here you can see more detail
    Releasing Standby memory

    as on post 2

    and from Microsoft

The Standby list, which is shown in blue, contains pages that have been removed from process working sets but are still linked to their respective working sets. As such, Standby list is essentially a cache. However, memory pages in the Standby list are prioritized in a range of 0-7, with 7 being the highest. Essentially, a page related to a high-priority process will receive a high-priority level in the Standby list.

For example, processes that are Shareable will be a high priority and pages associated with these Shareable processes will have the highest priority in the Standby list.

Now, if a process needs a page that is associated with the process and that page is now in the Standby list, the memory manager immediately returns the page to that process' working set. However, all pages on the Standby list are available for memory allocation requests from any process. When a process requests additional memory and there is not enough memory in the Free list, the memory manager checks the page's priority and will take a page with a low priority from the Standby list, initialize it, and allocate it to that process.

With regard to your split second lags, when do these occur - browsing, gaming, etc. More information is required please.

As Macboatmaster has said, Standby memory is released immediately if a process needs more memory.

When not in use for any other purpose Standby memory is mostly used to cache frequently used files and programs from the hard drive for quick access from RAM rather than reading from the drive. This is done by a process formerly named SuperFetch and now called SysMain. You can watch it filling Standby memory in Task Manager when you first start up your system.

    Hi,
I have added more information to the Original post. thanks.

The lags are only in visual content, the mouse movement, the audio and other stuff works just fine.

hi thank you for explaining. i thought i had some issue with my memory causing it to have these tiny lags.

I also sent you the full explanation of standby - from Microsoft

Re the lag what is the OC of the

Despite the temp showing 74 - as temps are sometimes very unreliable readings depending on sensors and which app is reading them are you ABSOLUTELY certain you have the cooler installed correctly
Hyper 212 Series - AMD Installation | Cooler Master FAQ

of particular importance is the amount of thermal compound you applied.
    See the link
There is no more efficient heat transmission than metal to metal and the ONLY purpose of the thermal compund is to fill the microscopic imperfections in the metal surfaces.

This leads me to think you should consider the CPU and cooler as your first suspect

I contacted my dealer who installed the CPU cooler, he says the cooler is installed properly.

regarding temp monitoring. I use HW monitor to measure the temperatures and was using amd ryzen master as well to monitor the temps, both were showing similar values

I understand , I did not realise the above meant a dealer ( presumably a computer expert) had installed it

    .

I am at a loss to understand how it did not fit properly in the first place.

However I suggest you remove the OC and then see if you still get the lags on the video/visual content.

What happened was this - we opened CPU cooler, we applied thermal paste on the CPU, after that we put the CPU cooler on the CPU but out of the four screws one was not going in properly, it was getting tilted despite the adjustment on brackets . We spent 3 hours and after that the dealer noticed that the nut(shown in yellow below) was causing the screw to tilt.

So he got the nut from another box of this same cooler and used it and then we were able to fix the cooler onto my CPU.

Not sure what is OC. if its overclocking then i was actually underclocking it and it was done only temporarily in windows(not in bios)

Yesterday i installed windows 10 again, clean installation, issue is still there. its like if something is moving on the screen then it skips a frame in between randomly.
