Also you think about her, and you tell yourself, why didn't it last... I had to replace my moms Computer at some point... She suffered atrociously from everything that was there the last 10 years and was "gone". the computer spend 2 months in intensive care then 1 year of periodic Physiotherapy to bring it at a satisfying workable state.

And most of the time they suffer from Hardware failure. Because they never touch something that works. Lost many icons but never a driver.
I've had mom using Linux Mint as well on her laptop for the last 6 years and she loves it. I've never had Linux go 'bad' ONCE on me since I started using it in 2012 unless it was from a change I made as a user somehow (and changes like that have caused issues have been VERY rare).

If an update messes something up, it has almost always just been a kernel update....restart....load the last kernel from before the update, and it's back to normal in 30 seconds. :)

Then again....on my own PC, I've also not had Windows 10 go bad at all either, really...but I do IT work on the side, so I know how to take care of it! :P

Since the installation is lost, aside that stitching rig, what was she doing with that ? You never know maybe a small SSD with Mint could do anything she needs ? With a much better speed... Never too late to try something else. I have Mint on a Vbox with 2gig ram an 1 CPU. and When I work with it, I forget completely that it's in a VM.
