    No SLEEP - powers down

An ASUS z390a, I7-8000, running Windows 10 was recently updated with the current BIOS, and switched to UEFI/GPT/secure boot in prep for Win 11.

SLEEP no longer works correctly, but instead powers down after a few minutes. When the power button is subsequently pressed W10 soon pops up without going through POST.

This error is generated in Event Viewer: The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S4).

The status of Fast Start up in W10 makes no difference; neither does Fast Boot in the BIOS. The latest NVidia display driver is installed.

Many FAQs and threads have been read, but it's unclear how to remedy the issue.

    Clues please??

    Hello borgus

I would confirm using appropriate Asus update tool for your model that all drivers and BIOS are up to date.

1903 BIOS is newly installed, so it should be up to date.
Nothing at the ASUS driver update site appears to be out of date on this PC... PRIME Z390-A|Motherboards|ASUS USA

For testing, I would disable hibernation/Windows fast startup by running

    Code:
    powercfg /h off
from an admin powershell and see if it sleeps then.

Hibernation was not enabled, but the -h command was run. No change.

The following sleep states are available on this system:
    Standby (S3)

So when you say it powers down vs sleeping, you have to log in to Windows 10 again and all apps you had open previously are closed or what?

If you run the following from admin powershell, does it sleep immediately?
    Code:
    rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState Sleep
If not, try changing to a different power for testing, make sure it's set to sleep, and see if that works.

That command immediately powers down the PC, which led to a discovery...

With the former BIOS, LEDs on the front of the PC would flash. But not so now, and therein lies the misperception. There is likely a BIOS setting for this.

Had been using the power button to restart. Then, after applying your latest suggested command, realized that the PC can be awakened with mouse or keyboard, as before. So the PC is actually sleeping. A false alarm.

Much appreciate the time you took to track it, and finally clue me in!

Thanks for the update. Glad it's solved. Let us know if find something in the BIOS about the LED - that's odd that it's changed sleep behavior now, unless the PC is going into hybrid sleep/hibernation and actually hibernating now.

It's an ASUS Aura lighting thing.

In BIOS | ADVANCED | ONBOARD DEVICES CONFIGURATION | LED LIGHTING there are options under the "When system is in sleep, hibernate or soft off states." The manual lists only ON | OFF, but there are four choices on this board...

ALL ON does the trick. It wasn't enabled by default.
