This hasn't changed the fact though that its benchmark comes in at 17-20%. Is that something I should be worried about?
If you ran the benchmark before, and now it is much worse, than there is maybe something to look into. I think the benchmark score is only helpful for before and after. I ran a test before, my machine works just fine, I do some (older and simple) 3D gaming, rendering using Blender and photo and video editing. It works more than okay for me, but the benchmark says it's not so good. I see it as more people that benchmark have spent loads of time and money on their machine, so the results are more likely do be compared to those, mostly unrealistic and unnecessary results. As long as the machine does what you need, and that that at least the processor is running at expected speed (check in task manager or Intel Power Gadget), then it's all good.

    My results from benchmark today:

How do I find what the expected speed is? The spec says 2.0Ghx is that the expected speed?

    - - - Updated - - -

I notice my own desktop is nominally 3.2 GHz but is showing 4.0 in task manager. The laptop is 2.0 GHz on the spec but with a couple of my astro programs open but now doing anything it drops to around 1.0

You can use Task Manager, select the Performance tab.

On the right it states the base values, on the left, it shows what the processor is currently running at. Depending on your power settings, it will probably go up and down depending on requirements. When I had an issue with a processor, the processor speed was down to 0.85 or 1.3 and was fixed, that's a thermal throttling thing, could be down to firmware or drivers.

You are correct about the speed of your i3, looking at the specs it doesn't have turbo boost so when "doing stuff", Task Manager should show it up to 2.00 GHz. If it is stuck at something low, no matter what you do, it is running slower than it should.

I also use Intel Power Gadet for processor monitoring, it shows a little more than Task Manager, but in your case, not much of anything helpful I don't think.

Reply to your recent: Your i7 (like mine) has turbo boost so can go above base frequency. Your i3 doesn't have turbo boost so max is 2.0 GHz.

How old is the laptop ?

On my Dell if I disable Intel speed steps. The CPU speed fall to 800MHz and sticks there.

Maybe also the current power plan may not be allowing it to clock at full speed.

On HP page of your machine there are some recent bios / firmware updates and drivers for it.

If you are running Windows Default drivers you could install HP's one.

Use the Hp Windows hardware diagnostic to assess and select what drivers should be installed.

thanks so much for your time and help.
