Another I found on the Dell forum. HDMI VS Display Port for monitor:
Got a Dell 8940 XPS without Graphics Card for a bargain. So far so good. A great compact machine, but the HDMI port on the mainboard is not active on boot. It takes 5-10 minutes after pressing the power button for the PC to realize there is a monitor connected. If connected via DisplayPort, everything works fine as it should. If only HDMI port is connected + ethernet + mouse + keyboard, display stays dark, keyboard and mouse are NOT powered and nothing happens. After 5-10 minutes the white led above the audio ports of the mainboard is activated, after another half minute or so mouse and keyboard are activated and then there is the output over HDMI.
Ahhh this sounds like the same thing! I think I have a displayport adapter to HDMI somewhere - I'll search it out and try it. Thanks for coming back to me on this Fireberd . I really appreciate it !

Can you verify which CPU you actually have - a K or KF. If its a KF (and according to my Dell contacts the KF's are frequently used) then the Dell support was correct that you need the separate video card.

When you boot without the Nvidea card, is there any yellow alerts of missing drivers on device manager?

Yeh Definitely K full spec as bellow but win10 not 11.

    11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-11700K processor
    Windows 11 Pro
    NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3070™ 8GB GDDR6
    16GB, 8Gx2, DDR4, 2933MHz
    1TB M.2 PCIe NVME SSD + 2TB SATA 7200RPM HDD

I bought a displayport to HDMI adapter and the same issue still exists.
Dell are coming to swap out the mobo tomorrow. Will let the board know the out come.
    Thnx

Is that the written Dell specs or the actual CPU-Z (or similar) program report?

hmm? not sure why my replay did not take! Anyways yes it is the Dell spec but also confirmed by CPU-Z.. I had the mobo changed today but still the same issue. It is being escalated now to level 2 tech afaik.
    cheers

The consensus at the Dell forum is that it is a version that requires a video card.

Well if it is that is another GREAT reason never to buy DELL!

If they specify a K processor is should be a given that the internal GPU will function. Additional cards are exactly that additional. I could have bought an F version and saved me some money.

If this is truly the case then I will expect full refund from them as it is not fit for purpose. I guess I'll find out for sure today when the rep comes back to me.

Thanks for looking into this. What a truly awful company Dell is.

edit... here isa link that I hope would support my case ... but I dunno??

    https://www.dell.com/support/manuals...0-cbd3520605b2

in that page it says this

NOTE 10th Generation and 11th Intel Core F-series processors do not support integrated GPUs. For computers shipped with these processors, a discrete GPU is required.

it says nothing about non core F-series processors not supporting integrated GPU.

btw Fireberd I am not shooting the messenger I know you are helping me by relaying the info you found - and I thank you for that.

and also... I cannot think of one reason that DELL would want to go this. They would have to de-invent what is already there. Any generic home build could work with or without a graphics card given a K processor and the most basic generic mobo!

I guess there is a reason they might do this and that is to ensure that if the graphic card malfunctions then the PC would be useless and only repairable by DELL. Again a very shoddy company if that is so.

Dell has a history of proprietary and using specific parts reference to how its ordered. The 8940 does not appear to be an exception. Most customers are happy with their purchase. Considering the large amount of items Dell sells the disgruntled are a very small minority, and you can't please every customer.

A case in point on proprietary, I had a Dell 5150/E510. It came with a D825 CPU. The Intel chipset used, according to Intel would support up to a D965. However Dell's custom implementation would only support up to a D945 CPU. The D965 would not work in a Dell.

I build my own desktops (that are also used in my recording studio) as I need more PCIe slots and USB ports than factory models (Dell,, HP, Acer, Lenovo, etc), The best laptop I've owned is a Dell and I've had Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba laptops.
