    Corrupt Files After Installing Update


    Hello,From time to time I loook in this Windows 10 forum site, in the news section. There I found about a new security update, KB5005565 which relates also to the system I have.Before installing any system update, or driver or even trying a new program, I run sfc scan, make some backup, full or differential.So before installing the above mentioned update, made sfc scan, all was OK, then installed the update. When done had to reboot.After reboot ran again sfc scan, surprise, there were system corrupted files which sfc repaired. Ran again the scan, this time it was OK.The update file was downloaded from the MS catalog, and the installation was clean and normal.Any explanation ?answers will be appreciated.Thanks.Motim.Windows 10, 19042.1237, 20H2 x 64

    Well I can tell you that the download itself (or rather the files at MS end are fine) as I always run SFC before an update so that I can make a system image before hand, knowing it will be good, then run SFC after the update just to check all went well. In my case both SFC scans were good. So it could be a few bits in your download were corrupted, not enough to fail installation but enough to cause SFC to repair one or more files after install.
    Whether the corruption, if any occurred during the download or during decompression of the files on your system would be extremely hard to determine, unless you are regularly scanning and finding corrupt files, which may point to disk or controller errors, but could just as easily be down to noise on your internet connection.

    I frequently get sfc errors after and update. I just let sfc /scannow fix them.

    May be an early symptom of SSD failure.

    No, I get those SFC errors after some updates too. They are particularly common after the optional preview C/D release updates.

    They are nothing to be concerned about. If you check the CBS.log to see what SFC actually repaired, the only things it fixed were a couple of permissions or ownership that were set twice. This was a trivial error as the log also states that both of the permission/ownership settings were the same, nothing would have broken even if they hadn't been fixed.

    The last time I can remember such thing before a very recent fiasco on my Haswell system, where I just went ahead and wiped the Adata SU 750 SSD, this month, was back in March, 2020.

    The recent ISOs have an issue where it gives an invalid package error message, complaining about a pre-RTM KB!

    I have Windows 20H2 on a PC that I recently started using & was having problems with Firefox & Thunderbird, the only programs installed so far.

    I ran sfc scannow & it appeared to fix the problem. I'm not sure how to analyze the CBS log but ran the command to generate that "RS" text file and it ends with:
    Repairing 0 components
    Beginning Verify and Repair transaction
    Repair complete

    Did it really repair anything?
    Is there something else in the CBS log that would indicate a repair was made?

    Those are the errors I get but only on one PC

    SSD failure is more likely only for the ones that have a lot of errors in the event log and SFC reports it could not fix some files. IIRC, I got that on a very cheap-looking SSD that came with a PC.

    About ones with hardware believed to be OK? Did you receive an "INVALID_PACKAGE" error for a pre-release KB?
    I seem to on a fresh install, every time! I think it's a Microsoft mea culpa with the 20H2 and 21H1 ISOs.

Windows search doesn't work. I ran SFC /scannow and there is corrupt files, the log is attached.
