    Hi All

Thanks very much for all responses to my initial post and whilst you've all done your best nothing so far has worked. To be honest I think we've all been looking in the wrong place. So far Windows has been behaving impeccably. Its when I try booting into three flash drives (that work on other PCs) that my problems start. Think about it. When I reboot I press F12 repeatedly until the Boot menu appears and this allows me to select the flash drive. At this time Windows hasn't started to load/reboot so how can it be a problem with Windows? As I said in my last post, I believe I've got a bum mobo which, if a site I was on in the last few days is to be believed, has serious problems with the USB system. I have therefore been looking at the possibility of installing another mobo, probably an MSI B550M Bazooka. However, I'm going to wait a while before taking any action on that in case a new BIOS is released between now and the new year.

Considering what I have said above I'm therefore calling a halt to this thread. No, its not been resolved - yet!!! Nevertheless I live in hope. I would like to sincerely thank all who have responded particularly since some would have taken an awful lot of trouble with their replies - and its all good stuff that I shall take note of in case I ever need it at any time - thank you so much for your efforts. However, I do hope you understand the stance I'm taking on this as I can't understand how Windows can possibly be at fault.

    Hi

Further to Paul's request that I keep the forum informed, I am happy to say that I have resolved this now by the simple(!) expedient of changing the mobo. After doing a lot of thinking and spending time searching for what seemed to be a suitable, affordable and seemingly reliable mobo, I opted for the MSI MAG B550M Mortar. So far I have not been disappointed and all three flash drives which failed to boot on my previous mobo now work fine as I expected they would.

I must be honest here and say that I've always found MSI mobos to be pretty good. They've never let me so far and I'm hopeful that this one also will not let me down. In addition to the flash drive problem on the last mobo I also had problems with CPU temps jumping about all over the place but so far this has not happened with the new mobo. Of course on occasions it does jump a little but the temps are so much more stable with this mobo. There is one thing I've noticed though and that is that the BIOS version is the very first version issued for the board. I've got no problems though with the way the board is behaving so I'll leave things as they are until, and unless, I find I have a problem that a BIOS update may solve.

Again thanks to all those who responded to my initial message and maybe I'll be in touch in the elevenforum in due course.

    Hi Tracey,

Quick things you can also check...

    In Bios

    Is secure boot enabled ?
    Is 4G Decoding disabled ?
    Is CSM module disabled ?

The first thing I did when I switched on with the new mobo was to ensure that both Secure Boot AND TPM 2.0 were both enabled. My understanding is that Secure Boot cannot be enabled unless CSM is disabled. As for 4G Decoding I'd never heard of that until you mentioned it but I gather it is disabled by default.

    That seems good,

Try to create your boot media with Rufus and use Partition=GPT and Target system=UEFI (Non CSM)

I've been running my PC and two others on UEFI for must be around four years now and as far as I am aware there's no way I can do that if CSM enabled. As I said all three of my flash drives work perfectly with my new mobo and as far as I am concerned the old mobo is good for Windows but should anything go wrong there's no guarantee I could get it working again with no means of booting up the PC - and I ain't reinstalling it just to check!!! As far as I am concerned now, this thread is closed.
