    Lenovo desktop high memory usage

    Hi all,

I have a Lenovo windows 10 Desptop-JAG8I5P, version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.1165). The installed physical memory (RAM) is 4GB and total physical memory is 3.84GB. The main use of the computer is pycharm and jupyter for coding, and chrome usage (looking up scripts, youtube, but not much else from that). I'm aware that 4GB isn't necessarily high, but I plan to use this computer for the duration of my university course. I've included a screenshot of the task manager, before starting chrome (with 57% of the memory, and 16% of the CPU being used), and after, where chrome is being used (with 62% of the memory, and 68% of the CPU being used).

Is there any way to mitigate such high usage? I've tried Microsoft Edge, Firefox, but it's about the same as chrome, in terms of memory and CPU usage. I've included a screenshot of the Resource Monitor, showing 29% of CPU usage with 104% maximum frequency, and perfmon.exe, avguard.exe, chrome.exe, are the top items, but I'm unsure if this is the reason for the high memory usage? It shows pycharm being 80.9% of the CPU usage, which causes the CPU usage to hit 100% overall. Is my desktop just now strong enough to run these programs?

Any help would be more than appreciated!

Windows at times will use all the RAM available to it. I don't concern myself with that until getting issues running programs and faults/failures with them. First upgrade I did to a computer was back in '92 running MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1, program was WordPerfect for Windows 5.1, memory was 4MB/MegaByte. WP would start failing at 8 or 9 pages of text and have to offload from RAM to the swap file, upgrading to 8MB helped. Only difference now is the memory and storage are in GB/GigaByte. By default Win10 manages the paging file/Virtual Memory but it is adjustable.

Thanks Berton! Your reply is much appreciated. Would you recommend closing out any specific windows 10 programs which might take up less RAM? I've noticed that Avira and Chrome can take quite a bit of RAM from time to time, and my desktop tends to lag when that happens. Or, perhaps as you mentioned, windows will use up all the RAM available to it, from time to time, regardless of such actions? Is there a specific memory percentage that you prefer to keep your own computer at (if that is possible)?

Yes, closing programs not in immediate use can be helpful. I've gotten into the habit with Notebooks I've rehabbed to max out the memory, usually 8GB but my newest is 6 years old, newer one may take more. There's normally only 2 slots for memory modules, not like Desktops that can have 2, 4 or 8 or more.

Is it the ThinkCentre M71e in your description ? If it is running an SSD... You can try to disable sysmain service, see how it affects performance.
