    @CMArbres,

    Chris, would you rather stand next to a properly grounded lightning rod, or one with the grounding not done properly/disconnected?

    You must pick one and you are bare footed in an ESD storm
    Oh, I am of a careful nature, be certain of that buddy. Lightning rods? It's a no brainer.

    As for PCs? I'm with you on this anyway. Every precaution possible makes good sense to my mind. But I would still disconnect the power cord and earth the chassis as well as myself. Might be overkill, but better safe than sorry and it's such a doddle to do.

    I'm such a liar. I just earth myself. LOL

    Have you got any more of that Gin and Tonic left?

    Be careful with the canned air - I broke a fan with that once - you need to hold the fan still while you blast it with the air!

    I think computer cleaning maintenance is a bit like housework - don't do anything until you notice something . My laptops get hard use, used day in day out for years - they're fine. If I notice it looking grubby I'll wipe the keyboard or other external parts (carefully). Even after years mine don't have that much dust inside so I don't bother cleaning the inside unless it starts to run a bit warm or the fan isn't working properly.

    Find most components go on for many many years. Upgrading a hard drive to a better one can also add a few years to an older laptop.
